Stephen C. Terry: Can Hallquist follow Aiken's path?

Posted on March 29, 2018 |
By Stephen C. Terry

This week’s Community Forum is by Stephen C. Terry of Middlebury, who served as Senator Aiken’s Legislative Assistant from 1969 to 1975. He was the former Managing Editor of the Rutland Heraldas well as a utility executive at Green Mountain Power. He currently serves as a political analyst for WCAX-TV.

Christine Hallquist, the current and longtime CEO of the Vermont Electric Co-op, is now an all-but officially announced Democratic candidate for Governor who has declared that she wants to run as an “Aiken Democrat.”

Greg Dennis: An interview with President Trump

Posted on March 29, 2018 |
By Greg Dennis

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

MIDDLEBURY AIRPORT, April 1, 2018 — Here’s a lightly edited transcript of my recent conversation with President Donald Trump.

GD: Thanks for stopping on the Middlebury airport tarmac for an interview today.

DT: Of course. It’s great to be back in New Hampshire. “Live free or die” and all that.

GD: Actually, sir, you’re in Vermont.

DT: Great place, Vermont. I won the primary here by the biggest margin anyone has ever won an election. (1)

Rep. Fred Baser: Lawmakers help craft brewers

Posted on March 29, 2018 |
By Rep. Fred Baser

Baser ONLINE 2014.jpg

Most of the state’s microbreweries should be pleased. After much work, the House voted out a bill reforming Vermont’s beer franchise laws as they apply to small brewers. There are a few other measures that received a thumbs-up from the House this month, but first a word on our craft brewers.

Vermont has over 55 craft brewers. The current rules concerning beer distribution were developed in the 1970s. They were designed to equalize the bargaining power between large breweries (Budweiser, Coors) and our local small distributors.

Victor Nuovo: Condorcet and the French Revolution

Posted on March 29, 2018 |
By Victor Nuovo

Nuovo, Victor ONLINE.jpg

Editor’s note: This is the eighth in a series of essays about political liberalism and conservatism.

Nicholas de Condorcet (1743–94) was a French aristocrat, mathematician, philosopher and revolutionary. He pioneered in the use of probability theory to explain social behavior, decision-making and voting patterns. He was a founder of modern political science. He was also a tragic figure: he was a leader in the French Revolution and became one of its victims.

Letter to the editor: Other solutions possible to help downtown parking

Posted on March 29, 2018 |
By Dorothy Mammen

Concerns have been raised by the Better Middlebury Partnership on behalf of downtown businesses regarding parking availability near the post office, with the suggestion that the ACTR bus stop on the St. Stephens side be reconsidered. On Monday, March 19, I decided to monitor parking availability in the twenty parking spaces on Main St. between the temporary bridge and Seymour Street on an hourly basis from 10:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., including recording license plates to assess turn-over of the parking spaces. I got some interesting results.

Letter to the editor: Veteran looks at Second Amendment

Posted on March 29, 2018 |
By Alexander Lyall

What could be better than a Bill of Rights? Madison’s use of language, ratified in 1791, was specific to the times, as words usually are, ever since hieroglyphics. Garde loo, the sixteenth century term tossed out with the second floor slops, did not survive plumbing. No one says garde loo anymore. Things change.

The flintlock musket, embraced by the 2nd Amendment, fired a single charge, requiring patience and dexterity. High velocity rounds at 600 per minute would have ended the Revolutionary War on the first day in Concord.

Letter to the editor: Not all statistics support 'reasonable gun control'

Posted on March 29, 2018 |
By C.W. Cobb

In a recent editorial Angelo Lynn engaged in the time-honored practice of cherry-picking statistics in an effort to sway public opinion, in this instance for “reasonable gun control.” Here are some other cherry picked statistics that are also worth considering:

Letter to the editor: ACTR bus stop site makes sense

Posted on March 29, 2018 |
By Laura Asermily

As a local elected official concerned about access to our downtown and serving as Public Health and Safety Committee Chair and ACTR board liaison, I am keenly aware of the tension for convenient and safe access to the post office and its nearby buildings and businesses.

Letter to the editor: Proposed Brandon solar project would be an eyesore

Posted on March 26, 2018 |
By Jonathan Blake

As a big supporter of solar, wind and hydro energy farming as an alternative to fossil fuels, I have always thought there is a time and place for everything. This solar project of Conti’s off Park Street in Brandon is not one of them. Not only can this project never be shielded from the view of anyone near it, the loss of the beautiful fields on the edge of town will be lost forever.

Letter to the editor: Students lauded for recent protests

Posted on March 26, 2018 |
By Gerry Loney

To all the K-12 students in Vermont who are making your voices heard:

I want to tell you how impressed so many of us are with you.  Realizing that kids like you are the targets of many mass shootings, you have decided to act. You are asking legislators to resist attempts by the NRA and other groups to stifle discussion. You are asking them, instead, to be concerned about your safety and to pass laws that will help protect all of you and all of us.
