Letter to the editor: Kindness can defuse violence

Posted on April 2, 2018 |
By Marion Bauer

A great deal of thought and energy is being given to confronting firearms. This is warranted. What seems to be missing from the whole debate is what each individual can do to make the community a better place. Each person can make a difference. Each student in each school can make a difference.

Posted on April 2, 2018 |
By Chloe Clark

I am Chloe Clark, a 14-year-old who goes to Middlebury Union High School. On March 21, I was part of a group of seven girls who went up to the Statehouse to testify in front of the Vermont House and Senate Education Committees about school safety. This was my statement:

Note of appreciation: Carol's helped MUHS poetry class

Posted on April 2, 2018 |
By Cathy Stoddert

Many thanks to Carol’s Hungry Mind Cafe for hosting our MUHS Poetry class reading and recitation recently. Not only did staff stay late to serve students, and their parents and friends, but kindly accommodated us all on short notice. Carol’s was a wonderful setting for our event. I am grateful for the cafe’s warm support of our community’s youth. Thank you!

Opinion: Soviets/Russians have history of violent retributions

Posted on April 2, 2018 |
By Haviland Smith

The established history of Soviet and Russian assassination operations since the birth of the Soviet Union in 1917 should remove any doubt as to the origin of the recent assassination attempt against Sergei V. Skripal and his daughter in Great Britain. It is almost impossible to dismiss the Russians as the originators of the operation and, even more importantly, it is difficult, if not impossible to identify any kind of logical alternative.

Ways of Seeing: An important freedom — from fear

Posted on March 29, 2018 |
By Joanna Colwell

Colwell, Joanna ONLINE.jpg

“Everyone Deserves to be Safe.” This is what my sign said the first time we held a vigil in Middlebury to draw awareness to police brutality in America.

Just imagine if you saw a tiny baby, crying on the ground. You wouldn’t have to think about what to do, would you? You would run to that baby, pick them up and cradle them. You would do everything in your power to keep that baby safe from harm.

Greg Dennis: An interview with President Trump

Posted on March 29, 2018 |
By Greg Dennis

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

MIDDLEBURY AIRPORT, April 1, 2018 — Here’s a lightly edited transcript of my recent conversation with President Donald Trump.

GD: Thanks for stopping on the Middlebury airport tarmac for an interview today.

DT: Of course. It’s great to be back in New Hampshire. “Live free or die” and all that.

GD: Actually, sir, you’re in Vermont.

DT: Great place, Vermont. I won the primary here by the biggest margin anyone has ever won an election. (1)

Rep. Fred Baser: Lawmakers help craft brewers

Posted on March 29, 2018 |
By Rep. Fred Baser

Baser ONLINE 2014.jpg

Most of the state’s microbreweries should be pleased. After much work, the House voted out a bill reforming Vermont’s beer franchise laws as they apply to small brewers. There are a few other measures that received a thumbs-up from the House this month, but first a word on our craft brewers.

Vermont has over 55 craft brewers. The current rules concerning beer distribution were developed in the 1970s. They were designed to equalize the bargaining power between large breweries (Budweiser, Coors) and our local small distributors.

Victor Nuovo: Condorcet and the French Revolution

Posted on March 29, 2018 |
By Victor Nuovo

Nuovo, Victor ONLINE.jpg

Editor’s note: This is the eighth in a series of essays about political liberalism and conservatism.

Nicholas de Condorcet (1743–94) was a French aristocrat, mathematician, philosopher and revolutionary. He pioneered in the use of probability theory to explain social behavior, decision-making and voting patterns. He was a founder of modern political science. He was also a tragic figure: he was a leader in the French Revolution and became one of its victims.

Letter to the editor: Other solutions possible to help downtown parking

Posted on March 29, 2018 |
By Dorothy Mammen

Concerns have been raised by the Better Middlebury Partnership on behalf of downtown businesses regarding parking availability near the post office, with the suggestion that the ACTR bus stop on the St. Stephens side be reconsidered. On Monday, March 19, I decided to monitor parking availability in the twenty parking spaces on Main St. between the temporary bridge and Seymour Street on an hourly basis from 10:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., including recording license plates to assess turn-over of the parking spaces. I got some interesting results.
