Voters reject Mount Abe bond for third time; new approaches sought

ADDISON COUNTY — After voters in the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union on Tuesday defeated a $29.5 million bond for the renovation of Mount Abraham Middle/High School, 1,785–1,196, the pressing question is, “What now?”

The bond’s defeat for the third time most likely delays any construction until at least 2020, pending the ability of the 5-town community to agree on a building project, vote for a bond and start the design phase.

Monkton town meeting wrap-up 2018

MONKTON — William Martin defeated Tim Earle, 288–236, for a two-year seat on the town selectboard, and Stephen Pilcher, who ran unopposed, was re-elected to a three-year seat on the selectboard.

Sharon Gomez, re-elected to a one-year term as the town/school clerk, and William Joos, re-elected to a one-year term as town/school treasurer, also ran unopposed.

Otto Funke, in another uncontested election, won a three-year term on the Mount Abraham Union Middle/High School District board.

2018 Monkton town meeting preview

MONKTON — Monkton will hold its annual town meeting at the Monkton Central School on Saturday, March 3, at 10 a.m. Voting by Australian ballot on seven articles will take place at the Monkton Fire Station on Tuesday, March 6, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Voters are asked to approve $1,356,037 in overall town spending for fiscal year 2019, a $42,095, or 3 percent, decrease from the amount approved for the current year.

Mount Abe bond faces crucial vote

BRISTOL — Residents of Mount Abe Unified School District will try for a third time to pass a bond vote to renovate the aging middle-and-high school facility on March 6, Town Meeting Day. This third vote is much like the previous two, with some significant compromises to reflect a 20 percent drop in proposed spending on the renovation.

Changing demographics prompt question: What does Mount Abe’s future hold?

BRISTOL — In 15 years, the student population at Mount Abraham Union High School has dropped 33 percent, from almost 1,000 students to 639. That drop in student numbers is part of the reason that the per capita cost of education per pupil has risen so dramatically over that same period.

Will that trend continue? Not necessarily, but the jury is out.

Monkton News for Feb. 22

MONKTON — Activities at the Russell Memorial Library for this school vacation week will be on Thursday, Feb. 22, from 3-5 p.m. and Friday, Feb. 23, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Craft tables will be set up both days for children of all ages to enjoy two different projects. One project will include several different bird feeder designs. The second craft project is called “beads are baaack” in which a child can use some great materials to create bracelets, bookmarks and more. Don’t miss these fun ‘make and take’ craft days.

Lincoln's Forlenza to run for Vt. House

LINCOLN — Paul Forlenza has spent the past several years supporting and recruiting Addison County Democrats to run for county and statewide offices.

The longtime Lincoln resident is now ready to place his own name on an election ballot.

Forlenza, former chairman of the Addison County Democratic Committee, confirmed last week he’ll run for one of the two seats representing the Addison-4 district in the Vermont House.

Budget for Bristol-area schools reflects 1% spending hike, 16 fewer employees

BRISTOL — Five-town voters on March 6 will cast ballots on a 2018-2019 public school spending plan for Addison Northeast that would result in a 1 percent increase in equalized per-pupil spending and spur some significant staffing changes within the newly created Mount Abraham Unified School District (MAUSD).

The proposed MAUSD budget reflects $24,746,279 in education spending to operate Mount Abraham Union middle and high schools; the elementary schools in Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton, New Haven and Starksboro; and the Addison Northeast central office.

Monkton seeks community input for town plan update

MONKTON — Every number of years each municipality in Vermont must update its town plan per the requirements of the Vermont statutes, and this year Monkton’s is due for revision.

The last Monkton Town Plan was issued in 2014. While it is the Monkton Planning Commission’s responsibility for this update, commission members believe it is necessary and desirable to engage town residents in dialog concerning the town’s future.
