MIDDLEBURY — An Addison District Court sentencing hearing scheduled for Monday for former Vergennes police chief Mike Lowe was postponed to allow a Vermont Department of Corrections probation officer time to prepare a report that will be used in the proceeding.

Lowe on Jan. 11 accepted a deal with state prosecutors in which he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of prescription drugs, a felony, and to one count of obtaining prescription drugs by fraud. Lowe also agreed not to contest a charge of neglect of duty.

By Urvashi Barooah

MIDDLEBURY — As part of the recent “De-Romanticizing India” 2010 Spring Symposium at Middlebury College, a panel on “Domestic Issues and Challenges in Contemporary India” focused on three themes: environmental degradation, party politics and the Hindu-Muslim conflict.

Environmentalist Saleem Ali from UVM, Walther Anderson from John Hopkins University and Safa Mohsin Khan, a sophomore at Middlebury College, were part of the panel that gave a multi-dimensional view of those domestic challenges.

MIDDLEBURY — For 18 years, Noonie Deli owner Karen Phelps has been serving up giant sandwiches — with heaping helpings of kind words on the side at no extra charge.

Monday saw Phelps pass her apron and cutting board over to a new owner, Bryan Phelps of Weybridge, who although unrelated shares not only her last name, but also a desire to keep the popular Middlebury deli operating in the same manner that has kept the customers coming through the years.

Now, Karen Phelps is ready for change.

By Andrea Suozzo

MIDDLEBURY — In a down economy, humane societies and animal shelters become overburdened with pets that owners can no longer afford to care for. And unwanted horses, some of the largest and most resource-intensive domesticated animals, present significant problems for those shelters.

On Tuesday, March 16, 6:30-8:30 p.m., veterinarians, members of Vermont humane organizations, farriers, horse owners and horse enthusiasts will gather at the Ilsley Public Library in Middlebury to discuss local solutions to what some say is an urgent problem nationwide.

MIDDLEBURY — The Town Hall Theater has served as a hotbed for collaboration between townspeople and Middlebury College students since its opening 18 months ago.

Those on both sides of the equation say performances by college groups are drawing a whole new audience when they are staged off-campus. In addition, shows where students act alongside community members are breaking down boundaries between formerly separate arts communities.

Posted on March 11, 2010 |
By Angelo Lynn

MIDDLEBURY — For the past several months, Victor Nuovo, a Middlebury selectman and the Charles A. Dana Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Middlebury College, has been drafting essays on Plato’s last and longest dialogue called “Laws.” He began the exercise, he said, at the urging of his wife, Rep. Betty Nuovo, D-Middlebury, who challenged him to take Plato’s work on the rule of law in a civil society and make it accessible to the layperson — not as an academic paper to other scholars.

MIDDLEBURY — A software glitch within the FairPoint Communications system interrupted both e-mail and Internet service for 280 customers in the Middlebury exchange this past weekend, a glitch that cost one local store at least $6,000 in lost business.

The service outage began early Saturday morning and lasted until late Monday morning, according to FairPoint spokeswoman Sabina Haskell.

“It was a software issue,” said Haskell. “It was a difficult issue to track down.”

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury planning office has approved two substantial new storage buildings in town, one that will house steel fabrication activities at J.P. Carrara & Sons, the other to provide storage for maintenance equipment at the Middlebury State Airport.

Plans call for J.P. Carrara & Sons to erect a 17,000-square-foot, pre-cast concrete building on its property off Case Street. The building will become the company’s hub for rebar fabrication, the centerpiece of which will be a recently acquired new automatic rebar bending machine.

MIDDLEBURY — Dr. Michael Kiernan recently took a break from his regular job treating patients at Middlebury’s Porter Hospital to work 20-hour shifts treating even more patients in earthquake-ravaged Haiti.

It was an experience he wouldn’t trade for anything.

“This was the trip of a lifetime,” Kiernan said on Thursday as he transitioned back into his duties in Porter’s emergency room after having spent 13 hectic-but-fulfilling days caring for scores of severely injured patients at a medical center in Milot, Haiti.
