Rail bridge project in downtown Middlebury takes shape

MIDDLEBURY — Gov. Peter Shumlin’s latest transportation budget envisions a cost of $9,013,833 for replacement of the deteriorating bridges that carry Main Street and Merchants Row over the railroad tracks in downtown Middlebury. Construction is anticipated sometime within fiscal year 2015, which begins July 1, 2014.

'Car' aids in rehabilitation at Helen Porter

MIDDLEBURY — Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center (HPHRC) officials spend a lot of time helping injured patients become mobile enough to take that much-anticipated ride home. They routinely practice getting in and out of a vehicle as part of their transition to independence, though practice has at times required bundling up for parking lot visits in rain or snow.

Middlebury's Byerly chosen to lead Lafayette Collge

MIDDLEBURY — Alison R. Byerly, former Middlebury provost and a member of the faculty at the college for 24 years, has been named the 17th president of Lafayette College in Easton, Pa.

A nationally recognized scholar, Byerly is one of the nation’s most prominent thought leaders on the role of technology in higher education today. She will take office on July 1, 2013, as the first woman president of Lafayette, which was founded in 1826.

Jury draw proceeds in Stearns suit against ACSU school district

MIDDLEBURY — Barring successful mediation, a Rutland County jury on May 6 will begin hearing a lawsuit filed in 2011 by former Addison Central Supervisory Union Business Manager Sharon Stearns against the ACSU.

In her lawsuit — filed in Rutland County Superior Court on Sept. 13, 2011 — Stearns alleges that she was bullied by Lee Sease, who was during her employment superintendent of ACSU, and then was placed on administrative leave after she complained about his behavior.

Middlebury sets town budget that trims fire department fund donation

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday finalized a 2013-2014 municipal budget of $8,951,760 to present to voters at town meeting.

The proposed spending plan, if approved by residents, would drive an increase of around 4.5 cents in the town property tax rate and calls for a one-year, 50-percent reduction in the amount of money the community annually places into its fire equipment replacement fund.

Career center to educate 'Road Scholars' at new Transportation Academy

MIDDLEBURY — The Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center has put into gear a new program aimed at getting young adults on the road to good-paying jobs in the transportation industry.

It’s called the “Transportation Academy,” geared to students 18 and over who are willing to take evening classes en route to a certificate that will qualify them for a variety of jobs planning, maintaining and traveling on state and local roads.

Hannaford Career Center eyes 2.8% spending hike

MIDDLEURY — Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center directors are proposing a 2013-2014 budget of $3,515,820, which represents a 2.8-percent spending increase over this year. The increase amounts to $95,639.

The budget proposal does not include any new teachers or major new initiatives and is mainly being driven by contracted salary increases and a projected 14-percent hike in health insurance premiums.

College exhibit shows beauty of black and white photography

MIDDLEBURY — May Mantell, a visiting professor of studio art at Middlebury College, this Wednesday will speak about the current exhibit at Middlebury’s Museum of Art — “Black, White, and Beautiful.” Mantell guest-curated the exhibit in conjunction with her January-term course “Introduction to Black and White Photography.”

The criteria for the exhibit were two: that they be exceptionally beautifully crafted silver prints and that they be meaningful works of art made by significant artists.

Middlebury-area schools to consider governance under one board

MIDDLEBURY — A committee exploring ways to streamline operations within the Addison Central Supervisory Union is recommending that residents in the seven-town school district vote on a referendum that some believe could reduce bureaucracy and create more educational equality and opportunities for students.

Specifically, the ACSU Study Committee wants to hold a vote on whether to combine some, or all, ACSU schools into a Regional Education District, known as a RED.
