ID-4 directors propose budget increase of 1/52%

Posted on February 1, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury voters on April 14 will consider a proposed Mary Hogan Elementary School budget of $5,771,990, representing a 1.52-percent increase in spending compared to this year.

The budget reflects no new programs, nor additional teaching staff. It actually represents a decrease of $87 in spending per pupil (from $13,539 to $13,452). That’s in large part because the school anticipates welcoming eight additional students next year, for a potential total of 395, according to Mary Hogan Elementary School Associate Principal Tom Buzzell.

MIDDLEBURY — Students at Middlebury College are putting down their pencils and picking up knitting needles this month in a volunteer effort to keep Addison County residents warm.

The students are part of a Winter Term workshop that is meeting once a week in January to create hats and scarves they’ll donate to the Middlebury nonprofit Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects (HOPE).

For AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer Carrie Pratt, who works at the college, the project was a way to combine two of her favorite things: knitting, a hobby she’s enjoyed since high school, and community service.

MIDDLEBURY — It began as a 2009 Arbor Day assignment during which Mary Hogan Elementary School fourth-graders led an effort to plant 16 new trees on school grounds.

But it was as assignment that blossomed into an educational, community-wide endeavor and culminated last week in the young students receiving a statewide award for their efforts, presented to them at the Vermont Statehouse on Jan. 20 by fellow Middlebury resident Gov. James Douglas.

MIDDLEBURY — Gov. James Douglas’s proposed state budget cuts have hospital administrators at Porter Medical Center keeping a close eye on what potentially severe cutbacks in health and human services funding could mean for Vermont hospitals.

With Medicaid funding and hospital reimbursements on the chopping block, Porter President James Daily said Vermont hospitals will have to figure out how to make do with less in a time when the state’s $150 million deficit “defines the time for us to pull together and get through this.”

MIDDLEBURY — The ID-4 school board will form a committee to study the feasibility of re-establishing a foreign language program at Mary Hogan Elementary School by the fall of 2011.

The study comes in response to a citizens’ petition, signed by 90 Middlebury residents, seeking resumption of world language instruction at Mary Hogan. School officials made the painful decision to drop French classes several years ago, primarily due to financial reasons.
