Middlebury eyed for methadone clinic

MIDDLEBURY — State and local health care administrators are studying the possibility of opening a methadone clinic in Middlebury, a plan that has some local officials concerned about the prospect of such a service producing a spike in drug-related crime in Addison County’s shire town.

Methadone is a synthetic opioid, similar to morphine. It is used as pain reliever, but also as part of a treatment plan to reduce withdrawal symptoms in people addicted to heroin or other narcotic drugs.

Two local teens heading to China

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Union High School rising juniors Nate Wulfman and Micah Lynch are packing their bags and preparing to jet to China next week for what for both will be a first ever trip to Asia.

Part of a six-student team that draws from high schools across the state, Wulfman and Lynch will explore southern China for 20 days as participants in Green Across the Pacific’s (GATP) Chinese-American Environmental Youth Leadership Program.

Educators learn to help families help themselves

MIDDLEBURY — Addison Central Supervisory Union officials believe that raising healthy and well-adjusted children is a challenge, and that even the most prepared parents sometimes need a little coaching.

With that in mind, ACSU health coordinator Mary Gill and more than dozen other ACSU elementary school teachers, counselors and principals are taking time out of their summer, learning how to help make parents’ jobs a little easier.

MIDDLEBURY — Extending coverage to every last mile may be the buzzword in Vermont’s broadband Internet discussion, but at a meeting in Middlebury last Wednesday, the real question was “what’s next?”

The event was the first meeting of the ad hoc “regional technology team” at the Addison County Regional Planning Commission, and it brought together voices from various sectors in the community to discuss what planner Kevin Lehman said will be a county-wide plan for increasing technology usage.

Former Porter patient rolls out Kids' Kart

MIDDLEBURY — Future young patients at Porter Hospital will owe a debt of gratitude to 11-year-old Jamee Barnum, who recently turned 10 days of post-operative boredom into a quest to provide entertainment options for other recuperating kids.

It was back in late March that the New Haven resident took ill — while eating her own birthday cake, no less. Her parents took her to Porter Hospital, where she received a disturbing diagnosis: Her appendix had ruptured, requiring speedy surgery.

Mary Hogan seeking to fill two board slots

MIDDLEBURY — The Mary Hogan Elementary School (ID-4) board is looking to fill two vacancies in the wake of recent resignations.

Board member Ruth Hardy has stepped down from the board in anticipation of a long-term family commitment abroad. She was in her first three-year term on the seven-member panel.

Serena Eddy-Moulton, an eight-year veteran of the board and its former chairwoman, also stepped down recently, citing a need to spend more time with family.

Prosecutor Teri Ames set to leave her post

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County State’s Attorney’s Office will soon be in the market for a new, part-time prosecutor to focus on cases involving crimes against women.

Addison County Deputy State’s Attorney Teri Ames will be stepping down from her job this Wednesday, June 30, to spend more time with family.

Redrawn electoral plan could split Middlebury district

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Apportionment Board (VAB) is nearing a vote on a map depicting 150 one-seat House districts — including a fractured Middlebury — and a Senate version that seems likely to keep the two-seat Addison County and Brandon district intact.
