Good Point secures e-waste contracts for three states

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury-based Good Point Recycling has won electronic waste handling contracts for New York and Rhode Island and is close to finalizing a similar deal with Vermont as it further burnishes its reputation as one of the world’s pre-eminent e-waste recyclers.

The company has also broadened its business plan by serving as a broker for low-cost, refurbished computers, funneling them to classrooms and blossoming businesses in a half-dozen economically developing countries thirsting for tools to join the global economy.

Porter nursing home offers a room reserved for terminally ill patients

MIDDLEBURY — Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center has 105 rooms designed to help people maximize their quality of life.

Now the center has opened a room aimed at aiding terminally ill people experience compassion and dignity in death.

Sen. Claire Ayer appointed to health care nominating team

MIDDLEBURY — Sen. Claire Ayer, D-Weybridge, has been named to a nine-member state panel that will vet nominees for the Green Mountain Care Board, which will help design and administer major components of a single-payer health care system for Vermont.

Gov. Peter Shumlin on Wednesday announced the members of the nine-member Green Mountain Health Care Board nominating committee. As dictated by state statute, the Governor appointed three, House Speaker Shap Smith appointed three, and Senate President Pro Tem John Campbell appointed three.

Service to teens, the hungry honored

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury volunteer and activist Dottie Neuberger might be one of the six recent recipients of honorary degrees from Middlebury College, but before the May 22 commencement ceremony she would never have dreamed about sharing the stage with a U.S. senator or an internationally recognized geneticist.

“I don’t see myself in the same category as most of the honorary degree recipients,” Neuberger said last week.

MVAA co-founder laid to rest

MIDDLEBURY — Emergency response officials from throughout the region turned out in full uniform on Thursday to celebrate the life of Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association (MVAA) founding member George “Wedge” Murdoch, who died May 22 after a long illness.

Murdoch, 76, was recalled by his colleagues as a dedicated and caring man with a wry sense of humor.

'Midd. Summer Festival' planned

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury has already carved out a niche as the state’s premier chili destination, drawing upwards of 3,000 people to its annual winter carnival and chili festival.

Now the town is looking to expand its gastronomic reputation into the warmer months: The Better Middlebury Partnership (BMP) is looking this August to launch the first annual Midd Summer Festival to showcase the best cheese, wine and beer the state has to offer

Cider maker nixes Connor Homes building sale

MIDDLEBURY — The discovery of environmental contamination at the Connor Homes building on Route 7 South in Middlebury has halted the planned sale of the 115,000-square-foot manufacturing plant to booming hard cider maker Green Mountain Beverage (GMB).

It also put on hold Connor Homes’ plans to lease the 131,000-square-foot former Tubbs furniture plant in the Brandon Industrial Park.

Paralympian inspires grads with his story

MIDDLEBURY — Clouds tempered the sunshine Sunday morning, but the rain held off as 593 Middlebury College seniors received their degrees on a pleasantly warm but dry morning.

Commencement speaker Chris Waddell challenged those in the sea of hopeful young faces, some belonging to 20-somethings nervous about what life held next for them, to be prepared for the unexpected and to make the most of what life throws their way.

“It’s not what happens to you. It’s what you do with what happens to you,” he said.

Middlebury firefighters eye $5.2M project

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Volunteer Fire Department is proposing a $5.2 million makeover of its Seymour Street and East Middlebury stations, a plan that could go to the voters as soon as next March.

Members of the Middlebury Fire Station Committee outlined their preliminary plans to the town selectboard on Tuesday, calling for the replacement of the East Middlebury station with a slightly smaller, more energy efficient structure, and an expansion/renovation of the Seymour Street facility.
