MIDDLEBURY — The annual meeting of the Green Mountain Club Bread Loaf Section will be held on Saturday, Jan. 25, in the Fellowship Hall of the Congregational Church in Middlebury. At the meeting, Chris Bouchard will present a program and slideshow titled “Tornado Alley.” Bouchard is a meteorologist with over seven years’ experience forecasting Vermont’s temperamental weather.

Middlebury selectboard pares down its town spending request

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Jan. 21 will take public feedback on a proposed 2014-2015 general fund budget of $9,154,323, requiring an anticipated property tax levy of $6,526,393.

The municipal budget, if endorsed by the selectboard and passed by voters at their March 3 town meeting, would account for a 1.85-cent boost in Middlebury’s municipal tax rate, which currently stands at approximately 91 cents per $100 in property value.

Town-gown pact on new buildings OK'd in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday voted 5-1 to endorse a term sheet outlining a $7.5 million deal between Middlebury College and the town that would culminate in construction of a new municipal building and recreation center.

Middlebury selectman threatens to quit

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Selectman Travis Forbes threatened to resign from his position late last week after leveling a breach-of-contract dispute against the town’s Public Works Department. Forbes alleged that department officials improperly rejected road sand from the Forbes family’s company — Case Street Redi-Mix Inc. — and instead ordered product from a different company, in spite of the fact that Case Street Redi-Mix had won the bid to supply the town’s sand this winter.

Helen Porter's Neil Gruber retires

MIDDLEBURY — After more than three decades of improving quality of life for senior citizens throughout the region, Neil Gruber is suspending his career to provide some much-needed TLC on the home front.

Gruber, 61, has resigned his post as top administrator of Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center (HPHRC) in order to spend more time with his wife, Joanne, who is battling what he called a “life-limiting illness.”

St. Stephen's ceiling repairs well under way

MIDDLEBURY — Repairs to the ceiling in the worship hall at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church on the green in Middlebury are nearing completion.

It was only a month ago on Dec. 5 when Liz Cleveland, coordinator for lectors and intercessors at the church, and St. Stephen’s organist George Matthew were in the building discussing heating when they were interrupted by a loud noise from within the sanctuary: One of the beams supporting the ceiling had fallen.
