Classics lovers binge on poetry at college

MIDDLEBURY — Poetry readings generally last one hour — not even the most devoted versaholic is expected to sit still any longer. So when I heard that the Middlebury College Department of Classics had organized a three-day marathon reading of a single poem, Virgil’s epic The Aeneid, I had to see for myself.

Middlebury to phase out townwide recycling contract

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury residents beginning next April will be able to choose their own haulers to collect curbside recyclables from their homes and businesses. That’s because the Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday voted unanimously to discontinue the townwide recycling contract once the current pact with Casella expires on March 31, 2015.

Theater preview: Civil War play will stick with you

If being memorable is a measure of a compelling production, the play “Ransom,” coming to the Middlebury Town Hall Theater on Saturday, Nov. 1, scores high. The scenes and the music have remained with me since 2010, the first time I attended “Ransom,” in the school auditorium in Rochester. The cast — all local townspeople — seemed to be still feeling it out, but the overall effect was that of a work destined to become a classic of its kind.

Holmes takes on Keeler in race for Addison County sheriff

MIDDLEBURY —  It was Gov. Peter Shumlin who appointed Don Keeler to serve as Addison County sheriff after longtime incumbent James Coons died in office during the spring of 2012.

Now Keeler is looking for an official mandate from the voters as he seeks to win the post for the first time on Nov. 4. Keeler faces opposition from write-in candidate Ron Holmes, a former deputy with the department. Both men mapped out their priorities for the Addison Independent during recent interviews.

Brain injury group to meet in Middlebury on Nov. 3

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Brain Injury Support Group (BIA – MIDD) will feature Lisa Bernardin and Debbie Tracht as co-facilitators on the first Monday of the next six months from 6-7:30 p.m. in Middlebury, in the Ilsley Library’s downstairs meeting room.

This Monday, Nov. 3, Debbie Tracht will present “Executive Functioning Challenges,” causes of which include traumatic brain injury and ADHD. Executive functions contribute to how one deals with attention, daily organization, problem solving, planning and prioritizing.

Osborne House makes early morning trip across bridge

MIDDLEBURY — Early on Monday morning Middlebury College’s Osborne House got a new address. After a plodding journey over Otter Creek, a team of workers manipulating remote controlled dollies moved the 118-ton house to its new location at 6 Cross St.

MIDDLEBURY — While the camera is usually thought of as a tool for recording the facts of the real world with great exactitude, it can also be used to explore the wonders of the imagination. PhotoPlace Gallery in Middlebury’s newest juried exhibition, “Dream, Fantasies and Illusions,” this other aspect of photography. An opening reception is on Halloween, Friday, Oct. 31, from 5-7 p.m.

Middlebury College students' behavior irks neighbors

MIDDLEBURY — More than a dozen Middlebury residents have raised concerns about a pattern of raucous behavior by Middlebury College students that they say keeps them up at night and lowers their quality of life.

The residents, in a meeting with Middlebury College administrators Wednesday morning, said this past weekend’s homecoming celebrations at the school — and particularly at off-campus homes of students — exacerbated an ongoing problem.

Middlebury technology firm lands $1M award to spur solar

MIDDLEBURY — A homegrown cloud software company specializing in data analysis has landed a major federal award.

Faraday — which incubated in the former county courthouse building in Middlebury’s court square — on Wednesday received a $1 million U.S. Department of Energy SunShot Initiative award. The funding will help Faraday develop the software service it sells to the solar power industry.
