Patton to speak at Sheldon Museum's annual meeting

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College President Laurie L. Patton will be the featured speaker at the annual meeting and dinner of the Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History on Thursday, Nov. 5.

Patton became 17th president of Middlebury on July 1, 2015. She joined Middlebury after serving for four years as dean of Duke University’s Trinity College of Arts and Sciences and as the Robert F. Durden Professor of Religion. At Duke, she oversaw 36 academic departments and programs in arts and sciences for the school.

Day of the Dead to be celebrated in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Folklife Center will host its fourth annual Middlebury celebration of Día de los Muertos (“Day of the Dead”) on Sunday, Nov. 1, from 2-5 p.m. in the first-floor gallery. The event will feature homemade Mexican food, a Día de los Muertos altar constructed by University of Vermont Spanish lecturer Rachael Montesano and her students, and a performance by the Burlington-based brass band Brass Balagan.

Economic development group offering business grants

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County Economic Development Corp. (ACEDC) announces that it will award five grants of $500 each to Addison County businesses for green energy projects. Winning businesses must make a minimum 1:1 matching contribution to the project. Applications are due by Friday, Nov. 13.

Eligibility requirements for the applicants include the following: The business must be located in Addison County, and the applicant must be in compliance with state regulations, be registered with the Vermont Secretary of State, and be in good standing.

Poet Richard Blanco to speak about his journey to the inauguration

MIDDLEBURY — Presidential inaugural poet Richard Blanco will discuss identity and belonging in a talk at Middlebury College’s Mead Chapel on Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. His talk, “Becoming American: An Inaugural Poet’s Journey,” is part of the Vermont Humanities Council’s First Wednesdays lecture series and is free and open to the public. The talk is presented with Middlebury College.

Aurora students learn about horses

SALISBURY — On a crisp October morning, Aurora School’s kindergarten through eighth grade students are enjoying all-school athletics.

“Since our beginning, 20 years ago, we have spent time as a school on Fridays for athletics,” co-founder and director Susan Vigne said. “We tend to focus on life sports that get our bodies moving and bring us together as a community. Whenever possible, we link our athletics to our yearly theme.”

This year, the school’s theme is Frontiers and Exploration.

MIDDLEBURY — To many people, retirement provides the opportunity to rest and relax after a career (or series of careers) that had kept them running and dictating day-to-day choices for what can be 45 years or more.

Sitting, resting and relaxing is what they crave most. Luxuries like reading novels and newspapers become easy to fit in, hobbies like knitting or exploring art are the center of attention, time to prepare delicious meals that previously were too rushed through is easy to come by.

County trash district keeps fees stable for next year

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County Solid Waste Management District (ACSWMD) officials have drafted a 2016 spending plan of $2,818,754 that would require no increase in the current $123-per-ton tipping fee for trash, and would keep level the rates it charges for receiving household hazardous waste and recyclables handled at its transfer station off Route 7 South in Middlebury.

Middlebury's Charter House to double capacity to help homeless

MIDDLEBURY — The Charter House Coalition will double its capacity to serve homeless families this winter at its Middlebury headquarters, this in response to an increased demand for emergency accommodations.

The Charter House Coalition is a nonprofit dedicated to providing housing and food to those in need in Addison County. During the course of last winter, the coalition provided a temporary home to 55 different individuals and six families at the Charter House at 27 North Pleasant St. in Middlebury.

Middlebury native wins rugged race and a $50,000 wedding

KILLINGTON — Rachel Corvington, 34, was on her way to the Spartan World Championship in Lake Tahoe in August when she heard about the Spartan Fittest Bride Challenge. First prize (a fully-catered wedding at Spartan founder Joe De Sena’s Riverside Farm) had a value of approximately $50,000.

That’s over three times what first place earned in cash and prizes ($15,000) at the Spartan World Championships.

Corvington, an elite racer who finished in the top 35 at the Worlds, thought she’d have a good shot at winning the race.

Local theater troup breathes life into a dysfunctional family in 'Gamma Rays'

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Actors Workshop’s fall production is an intensely lyrical American play, Paul Zindel’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds.” Despite that sci-fi sounding title taken from the name of a science fair project, the play is about a New York family caught in poverty and despair.
