A story made for film - A student filmmaker returns to shoot dog sled racer's quest

MIDDLEBURY — In his second year as a student at Middlebury College, Tommy Hyde took a film class that required students to spend a month with a local who was doing something “interesting.” Hyde found Doug Butler, full-time dairy farmer and dog sled racer.

Upon meeting Butler, Hyde was sure he had discovered true, old-school Vermont.

“Soon I found myself on the back of a sled ripping around trails behind this long-haired, wide-eyed, crazy, kooky old Vermonter,” he said.

MIDDLEBURY — Many of those who visit the Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects (HOPE) Community Services Center on Boardman Street in Middlebury are looking for help in paying utility, heating, rent and medication bills. Others line up for free food and leads on jobs and affordable housing.

But an increasing number of folks are making a beeline to the HOPE headquarters in search of something else: Bargains, on a variety of items ranging from shoes to jewelry.

Middlebury downtown eyed for master plan

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury planning officials are recommending that the town design a master plan for its downtown in order to better coordinate future development in an area that has already undergone the construction of a new municipal building and will face more major changes — a new public park and a disruptive rail bridges project.

It’s a planning process that officials acknowledge could take more than a year and thus could affect the timing of a major economic development project slated for the heart of downtown.

MIDDLEBURY — Two-year-old Middlebury business Seedsheet is redefining local foods: Cam MacKugler, founder and CEO of Seedsheet, wants to put a Vermont farm on the properties of homeowners and apartment dwellers across the nation.

The company builds pre-seeded garden sheets to make gardening easier and more accessible for home gardeners. Seedsheet sources its seeds locally to bring Vermont gardens to windowsills, rooftops and backyards across the nation.

Festival comes back to the green

MIDDLEBURY — Since the first performance in 1978, Middlebury’s Festival on-the-Green has been a sign of summer, a place for the community to gather and a celebration of music and craft.

This year, the 38th annual Festival on-the-Green will be back at its home on the green in downtown Middlebury, and in this iconic setting performers will dazzle visitors once again.

After two summers in the Middlebury Recreation Park, the festival will return to the cherished place where memories have been made for many attendees.

New deal sought for railroad bridge project in Middlebury

Exchange Street looked at as tax assessment district

MIDDLEBURY — Some Middlebury business owners are floating the idea of creating a new tax assessment district that could generate more revenue for public infrastructure improvements — including perhaps water main upgrades — along Exchange Street and within the community’s industrial park.

Such a tax assessment district would become Middlebury’s second.

Porter to upgrade patient monitoring system

MIDDLEBURY — The Porter Medical Center Auxiliary Board of Directors has approved a contribution of $131,000 to Porter Hospital in support of a state-of-the-art patient monitoring system upgrade project. The total cost of the project is $350,000, with the auxiliary donation providing the final funding portion of what Porter’s Interim CEO Dr. Fred Kniffin has called “one of my highest-priority projects and a significant step forward for our community hospital.”
