Middlebury College students to host family literacy programs

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College’s Page One Literacy program will host two family events this fall.

First is a “Robert Frost Walk” in Ripton on Sunday, Oct. 18, from 1-3 p.m. Families are invited to join Middlebury College students for a poetry walk on the Robert Frost Trail. The 1.2-mile loop offers poetry stops along with way. There will be snacks and games as well.

In case of rain, the event will be moved to the Kirk Alumni Center at Middlebury College. Visit sites.middlebury.edu/page1/ if the weather is questionable.

Airport noise to be measured; pilots discuss runway plan

MIDDLEBURY — A consultant has placed five noise monitors at the Middlebury State Airport to give Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) aviation officials an idea of what neighbors are currently hearing near the site and how that sound level might change following a proposed 700-foot extension of the airport runway.

Meanwhile, some of pilots who regularly use the Middlebury airport are starting to weigh in on the proposed $3.5 million project, saying that a runway extension will be key in assuring safer landings and takeoffs.

MUHS students earn top musician honors

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Union High School musicians Sophie Saunders, flute, and Haven Tate, bass trombone, have been selected to perform with the National Association for Music Educators (NAfME) Honors Concert Band in Nashville, Tenn., in late October. Only four students from Vermont were selected for this honor.

Saunders and Tate will rehearse for three days with other top students from around the United States, culminating in a performance on stage at the Grand Ol’ Opry.

Local artist produces Morgan horse documentary

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury artist Doug Lazarus started to develop a real appreciation for the Morgan horse five years ago while researching, for a literary project, the Vermont roots of the celebrated breed.

But Lazarus quickly came to the conclusion that the history, attributes and many accomplishments of the Morgan horse could not fit in one book.

Middlebury eyes fix for key Court Street intersection in front of high school

Folklife center exhibit focuses on state's logging industry

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Folklife Center will host an opening reception and artist talk for its new exhibit, “Portrait of a Forest: Men and Machine,” on Friday, Oct. 9 from 5 to 7 p.m.

The exhibit, which combines contemporary photographs by Weybridge photojournalist George Bellerose, with historical photographs and commentary by the logging and forest products community, will run through Jan. 9.

Arts walk takes final bow of the season on Oct. 9

MIDDLEBURY — The final Arts Walk of the season is Friday, Oct. 9, from 5-7 p.m., featuring works of paintings, photography and authors all over the village, from Main Street to the Marble Works.

•  American Flatbread, Marble Works, paintings by Micah Lynch. Lynch grew up and lives in Shoreham. He is currently attending Hobart and William Smith Colleges as a studio art and architecture major. His inspiration for this show was a deep interest in native cultures in America and around the world.

NexBridge to make its pitch for downtown Middlebury property

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday stopped short of endorsing NexBridge as the prospective developer of town-owned land behind the Ilsley Library, instead opting to invite the local group in to further explain its proposal for a multi-story, L-shaped building on the Bakery Lane parcel that would include retail, office and residential uses and associated parking.

NexBridge is the only team currently in the running to develop the so-called “Economic Development Initiative,” or EDI, property off Bakery Lane, behind the Ilsley.

Middlebury selectboard addresses several issues

Agreement caps pipeline costs for Vermont Gas ratepayers

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Gas on Wednesday morning announced a memorandum of understanding with the Vermont Department of Public Service placing a limit of $134 million on the amount it will seek from its ratepayers for expenses related to the Addison Natural Gas Project pipeline.

That amount is $20 million less than the $154 million the company had forecasted for the project back in December.
