Expansion, renovation plan seeks to lift Isley: Proposal could cost up to $10 million

MIDDLEBURY — A proposed renovation and expansion of Middlebury’s Ilsley Library was unveiled at Tuesday’s selectboard meeting that would remove two older additions and increase the library’s square footage from around 19,000 square feet to more than 25,000 square feet.

Discarded TVs help recycling firm rebound

MIDDLEBURY — Like most of us, Robin Ingenthron spent Tuesday weathering a major winter storm.

Actually, he’s had a lot of experience surviving storms of both the natural kind and those endemic to the business world.

Major setbacks threatened to bury his Middlebury enterprise, Good Point Recycling, several times during the past three years.

But Ingenthron refused to give up, and Good Point has emerged stronger than ever in a recycling industry that has chewed up and spit out many of his former competitors throughout the country.

Rainville named top small business man in Vermont

MONTPELIER — The U.S. Small Business Administration has named the head of a Middlebury toy manufacturer its 2017 Vermont Small Business Person of the Year.

Michael Rainville, president and owner of Maple Landmark, is being recognized for his company’s employment growth, financial success, expansion and community involvement.

Middlebury fends off bridges complaint

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday revisited the upcoming effort to replace the downtown rail bridges and rebuild the railroad through downtown Middlebury, a state and federally funded project expected to run from 2018 to 2020 and include major disruption to the downtown in its final summer.

Chairman Brian Carpenter said the latest he heard from the Agency of Transportation is that agency officials are leaning toward installing temporary bridges sooner, rather than later, in order to make the entire project run more smoothly.

Shashok claims seat as vice chair of board

MIDDLEBURY — After two rounds of voting on Tuesday evening, the Middlebury selectboard emerged with a new vice chairwoman, Susan Shashok.

Shashok and incumbent vice chairman Nick Artim tied with three votes apiece after the first round, with Selectwomen Laura Asermily and Heather Seeley backing Shashok and Selectboard Chairman Brian Carpenter and Selectman Victor Nuovo backing Artim.

Normally, a seventh member of the board would break a tie, but that seat is temporarily vacant.

Whirlie's World selling to Rutland outfit

MIDDLEBURY — The gears will continue to whirl at the Whirlie’s World amusement center at 1232 Exchange St., Middlebury, thanks to the sale of the business to new owners Jeremy Griffin and Danielle Deroscher.

Current owners Peter and Naomi Neff confirmed the sale of business last Friday. It was in 2011 that the Neffs opened Whirlie’s World, which offers interactive video games, laser tag, bounce houses, arcade activities and snacks for kids and families.

Jazz ensemble to perform March 20 at St. Stephen's

MIDDLEBURY — As part of St. Stephen’s Lenten Recital Series, The Middlebury Union High School Jazz Ensemble, also known as “Midd Jazz” will be performing a concert on Thursday, March 30, at 12:15 p.m. The auditioned ensemble meets daily for 40 minutes and is made up of students from grades 9-12. The ensemble has performed for 25 years at the Vermont Association for Jazz Education, placing first the past 10 years.

Porter amends bylaws, seals affiliation deal

MIDDLEBURY — The members of Porter Medical Center voted unanimously at the PMC annual meeting last Wednesday night to amend the Porter bylaws, which represented the final step for the Middlebury institution to complete an affiliation with the University of Vermont Health Network.

The affiliation will become effective in April, and the formal community launch is planned for May 11 during National Hospital Week.

Poet to discuss 'The Importance of Writing the Outdoors with Wonder'

MIDDLEBURY — In a combined talk/reading at Middlebury College on Tuesday, poet Aimee Nezhukumatathil will explore a different way of thinking about environment and discuss “wonder” as an ecological love practice in nature writing.

The March 21 presentation at The Orchard, Franklin Environmental Center, Room 103, is titled “Floating Above this Difficult World: The Importance of Writing the Outdoors with Wonder.” It will take place from 4:30-6 p.m.
