2016 Hancock Town Meeting Wrap Up

HANCOCK — At Tuesday morning’s town meeting, 84 residents of Hancock voted on town and school spending plans as well as a number of individual appropriations.

For the town’s general and highway funds, residents approved a $417,460 spending plan, which represents a decrease of 5 percent from the $441,653 approved last year.

2016 Hancock Town Meeting Preview UPDATE

HANCOCK — On Town Meeting Day residents of Hancock will vote on town and school spending plans as well as a number of individual appropriations. The meeting is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. at the Town Hall on March 1 with town business first, followed by school business.

124 grads ski to their reward — a diploma

MIDDLEBURY/HANCOCK — Surrounded by cheering throngs of family and friends, 124 Middlebury seniors celebrated the completion of their undergraduate careers on Saturday, Feb. 6, at Mead Chapel.

Middlebury’s “Febs” — so called because the majority of them started their college education here in February 2012 — will earn their official bachelor of arts degrees on March 1. But this past weekend the college held several events to celebrate the graduates’ achievements.

Hancock to vote on town hall fix

HANCOCK — Hancock residents are being asked to gather on Wednesday, Oct. 7, to decide whether to invest around $100,000 into key repairs to their historic town hall building off Route 100.

“The biggest thing is the foundation needs work,” said Hancock Selectwoman Shelley Twitchell. “It hasn’t been tended to like it should have been and it is beginning to crumble.”

Pride blooms in Hancock as town revitalizes

HANCOCK — In 2011 Tropical Storm Irene steamrolled through the town of Hancock, delivering a series of potent haymakers to many of its roads, culverts and, to a certain extent, community morale.

Four years later, the eastern Addison County town of 323 residents is on a firm road to recovery, a renaissance that has produced an improved and expanded town green, an imminent relocation of the municipal offices to a reclaimed former schoolhouse, and ongoing renovations to the historic Hancock General Store building near the intersection of Routes 125 and 100.

Town Meeting Recap 2015: Hancock

HANCOCK — Voters on Town Meeting Day approved town and school spending budgets as well as a number of individual appropriations in Hancock.

For the town’s general and highway funds, residents approved a town budget of $441,653, which was corrected after being warned incorrectly. The approved budget represents a 19-percent spending increase over the budget approved last year. The increase includes $70,000 to move the town office and the library to the location of what had been the school. The spending plan also includes a highway budget of $98,500.

HANCOCK — On Town Meeting Day voters in Hancock will vote on town and school spending budgets as well as a number of individual appropriations. The meeting is scheduled to kick off at 10 a.m. at the Town Hall on March 3.

For the town’s general and highway funds, residents will vote on a $356,277 spending plan, a decrease of 8 percent from the $326,842 approved by voters at last year’s town meeting.

Hancock man accused of sexually assualting woman

HANCOCK — A Hancock man on Sept. 12 pleaded innocent in Windsor Superior Court, criminal division, to a felony charge of aggravated sexual assault, after police investigated allegations that the man repeatedly engaged in non-consensual sex with a female neighbor described in court records as having been diagnosed with a mental disability.

Hancock Town Pride launches summer concert series this week

HANCOCK — The town of Hancock will be a musical destination this summer, whether one is craving singer-songwriter folk music, a Pete Seeger style commemoration, or the lively rhythms of Vermont’s largest Caribbean-style steel band.

Hancock’s first annual free concert series will begin this Thursday, July 10, at 6:30 p.m. on the town green, sponsored by Hancock Town Pride with a grant from the Rutland Regional Medical Center.

Hancock receives $50,000 to restore schoolhouse for town offices

HANCOCK — On Monday, June 23, United States Department of Agriculture officials announced that more than $430,000 in USDA Rural Development Community Facility grants, loans and loan guarantees will be disbursed among eight organizations for the purchase, improvement and protection of community assets.

In Addison County, the town of Hancock received a $50,000 USDA grant toward the renovation of the 1850 schoolhouse, thanks in large part to the efforts of Hancock selectboard member Shelley Twitchell and Town Clerk Sarah Deering, who wrote the grant.
