Middlebury Police Log: Van reported stolen recovered in Rutland

MIDDLEBURY— On Thursday, Feb. 4, at a little past 3 p.m. a woman reported to Middlebury police that her vehicle — a maroon, Dodge 1500 wheelchair van — had been stolen while it was parked in the Hannaford grocery store parking lot.

The van was recovered in Rutland and returned to the owner after police searched it for evidence. The case is still under investigation.

In other recent activity, Middlebury police:

• On Feb. 1 assisted a woman suffering from dementia.

City resident cited for alleged elderly assault

VERGENNES — Vergennes police on Feb. 1 cited a Thomas Circle resident into court for abuse of a vulnerable adult, a charge they allege stems from an assault on a 91-year-old woman committed by a relative.

Cited was Tiffany L. Gross, 34, who was released with conditions that included that she not make contact with the victim or return to the Thomas Circle home, in which police said she had been living with the victim.

MIddlebury Police Log: Student helps lead police to stolen laptop

MIDDLEBURY — A Middlebury College student on Jan. 31 provided a valuable assist to state and local authorities who were able to find his property and other items allegedly stolen from campus.

Middlebury police received a report that a MacBook laptop computer had been stolen from a college student. The student was able to trace his stolen device to a North Ferrisburgh address, according to police.

Vergennes Police Log: Police deal with family disputes, unruly customers

VERGENNES — Vergennes police between Jan. 25 and 31 dealt with a variety of incidents, including a family dispute, a possible case of driving under the influence of drugs, a jewelry theft, and an unruly drugstore customer.

In those seven days, Vergennes police:

•  On Jan. 25 helped a car owner get into a locked vehicle on Monkton Road.

•  On Jan. 25 checked the welfare of a Main Street woman on behalf of a friend; she was found to be OK.

Vermont State Police Log: Icy conditions result in several accidents

ADDISON COUNTRY — Snowfall on Friday, Jan. 29, resulted in some traffic crashes that kept Vermont State Police busy.

Police said the weather changed from light snow to heavy, wet snow with local accumulations of two inches on Route 22A during that morning. At around 10:30 a.m., troopers were called to Route 22A at the Bridport-Shoreham line for several vehicles that had slid off the roadway. They investigated three crashes involving tractor-trailers.

Bristol Police Log: Police received skills training in December

BRISTOL — During December, Bristol police officers took part in training four times, according to a recently released log for that month. That training included a refresher course in National Information Based Reporting Systems, an online testing certification to remain compliant with the NCIC national crime database, and eight hours of training on interacting with people experiencing mental health issues. Bristol Chief Kevin Gibbs took part in a training session for chiefs and the sheriff held at the Middlebury Inn.

Vergennes Police Log: Assault and pot charges possible for five

VERGENNES — Vergennes police say charges are possible for as many as five people, four of them Northlands Job Corps students, following a Jan. 18 incident along the Macdonough Drive side of Otter Creek.

Police said they responded to a reported assault at the site and that a man with a bloody nose reported that four males had attacked him. Police followed footprints back to the Northlands campus and said they spoke to one adult and three juvenile students about the incident.

Middlebury Police Log: Tires reported slashed in, around Marble Works

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police last week investigated multiple reports of tire slashings in and around the Marble Works shopping complex on Jan. 19 and 20. Reports included a vehicle that had all four tires slashed while parked off Seminary Street on Jan. 20, a Noonie Deli van that had all four tires slashed while it was parked off Maple Street on Jan. 19, a business truck with a tire slashed while it was parked in the Marble Works shopping complex on Jan. 19, and a vehicle with a tire slashed while it was parked in front of the Middlebury Post Office on Jan 19.

Vermont State Police Log: Gun-wielding man threatens businesses

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police in the New Haven barracks in the past week reported two car crashes, one in which a Shoreham man was killed, and a theft from a store. Troopers also responded to a report that a Middlebury man brandished a gun and threatened to shoot the owner of a Leicester scrap metal business.
