Scores of friends help Margaret Owen celebrate her 90th

BRISTOL — Margaret Owen and about 68 friends celebrated her 90th birthday on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 4, at the First Baptist Church of Bristol.

Music was provided by David Henderson, Jenny Telling and Stephanie Ahern and included the “Margaret Waltz” and a song that was written by Owen, herself, and Telling. The words were a poem that Owen had written about her faith in the Lord, which she called “My Friend.”

Work begins on Bristol Village housing project

BRISTOL — A somewhat unusual housing development planned for the center of Bristol has broken ground on property off North Street behind the Rite Aid and Shaw’s shopping area.

Bristol Village Cohousing, a 14-unit project that bills itself as an “eco-village” is inviting the public to a ribbon cutting ceremony this Saturday, Sept. 10, at 11:30 a.m. at 16 North St. After the event, tours of the site will be available.

The first units will be ready for occupancy in January and the entire project is slated to be completed next April.

Bristol business park proposal taking shape

BRISTOL — Bristol’s quest to build a business park took a major leap forward Monday when backers of such a park unveiled their prototype to be located on a Stoney Hill parcel behind the new fire station.

For many this vision to put a business park in Bristol and bring scores of permanent jobs to town began when the town purchased the 30 acres on Stoney Hill for $1 in 1999.

Applications available for Bristol-area arts funding

BRISTOL — 5-Town Friends of the Arts is now accepting grant applications for its fall round of community grants.

The Community Grants program helps to fund experiences and events in the fine arts, performing arts, history and other cultural experiences to enrich the lives of people living in Monkton, New Haven, Bristol, Lincoln and Starksboro.

Harper wants to build sustainable economy at business park

Bristol-area candidates in demand for unified school board

BRISTOL — When residents in the five Addison Northeast Supervisory Union towns cast votes this Nov. 8 on a proposal to unify budgets and governance of all six of their schools, they will also vote on members of the board that will direct that unified school district.

So the ANeSU’s Act 46 Study Committee is looking for residents of Bristol, Starksboro, Monkton, Lincoln and New Haven to run for the 13 seats on the unified school board.

State board receives school unification plan from ANeSU

BRISTOL — The finalized plan for unifying governance and budgeting among all six schools in the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union is now before the Vermont State Board of Education, which is expected to review the plan at its Sept. 20 meeting in St. Johnsbury.

If approved by the state board, the plan will come before the voters of Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton, New Haven and Starksboro on Nov. 8 for their decision.

Bristol man cited for stalking twice last week

BRISTOL — Bristol police jailed a 20-year-old Bristol man last Friday afternoon for allegedly stalking an ex-girlfriend.

At 12:55 p.m. on Aug. 26, Bristol police received a report from the former girlfriend of Daryn Barsalou that Barsalou was violating an abuse prevention order. Police then received a call from Barsalou reporting that the former girlfriend was following and harassing him.
