Mount Abe budget up 1 percent; proposal preserves staff & programs

BRISTOL — On Town Meeting Day, residents in the Bristol area will vote on a Mount Abraham Union High School budget that cuts spending from the current year by almost 4 percent to $13,389,914. But, because of an anticipated drop in the number of students, the budget proposal OK’d by the Mount Abe school board on Tuesday raises per-pupil spending by around 1 percent.

ANeSU begins search for school leaders

BRISTOL — The search for a new superintendent is under way in the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union.

Former Vermont Secretary of Education Armando Vilaseca began his tenure as interim ANeSU on Nov. 30 and will serve through the end of the 2015-2016 school year.

Budget wrinkle at Mount Abe

BRISTOL — Addison Northeast Supervisory Union officials notified the Independent on Wednesday that the Mount Abraham Union High School Board will likely need to revote the recently adopted 2016-2017 spending plan at a later meeting to formally approve it.

Many seats up for grabs on ANeSU boards

BRISTOL AREA — Sixteen seats on Addison Northeast Supervisory Union school boards come up for election this March, and the deadline for getting your name on the ballot is only a week away.

Residents will be voting on six school board seats in Bristol, five in Monkton, two in Starksboro, two in Lincoln and one in New Haven. In Lincoln and New Haven, all open seats are for those communities’ respective elementary school boards. Open seats in Bristol, Monkton and Starksboro are split among the elementary school boards and the Mount Abraham Union High School Board.

Bridport man to give insights on his experience in Peace Corps

BRISTOL — A personal journey as a Peace Corps volunteer where ideals encountered the gritty working realities of another culture is the subject of the upcoming One World Library Project program on Thursday, Jan. 21, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Lawrence Memorial Library in Bristol. Paul Kenyon, an engineer from Bridport, will present “It’s Often Not What We Expect: Experiences of a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Dominican Republic.”

'The Gin Game' to be staged in Bristol, Jan. 23

BRISTOL — Bristol actors Diana Bigelow and Jim Stapleton will perform a staged reading of “The Gin Game” by D.L. Coburn on Saturday, Jan. 23, at 7 p.m. in Holley Hall. This single performance will be sponsored by the Bristol Gateway Players and will serve as a benefit to improve the acoustics of the hall.

Police say man drove 118 mph on Route 116 in Bristol

BRISTOL — An East Middlebury man is due in court today to answer to multiple charges after he allegedly led authorities on a chase through three Addison County towns on Sunday at a speed that topped out at 118 miles per hour, according to Vermont State Police.

ANeSU teacher contract talks go to fact finding

BRISTOL — After five hours of mediation earlier this month, negotiations over contracts for teachers in Bristol-area schools concluded with no agreement and with no additional mediation sessions scheduled.

The Addison Northeast Supervisory Union Bargaining Council on Dec. 10 issued a statement saying that “the parties will now select an impartial fact-finder and proceed to a fact-finding hearing. It is unlikely that this will occur any earlier than late January of 2016.”

Free Christmas Dinner on tap in Bristol this Sunday

BRISTOL — Bristol’s annual Christmas Dinner and Festival has become an anticipated tradition in the community over the past 32 years. The 33rd annual celebration is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 20, at the Inn at Baldwin Creek and Mary’s Restaurant.

The festivities begin at 11:30 a.m. and continue until all are served, usually around 2 p.m. The Inn at Baldwin Creek in Bristol provides the meal and dozens of volunteers help coordinate the event.  Everyone is invited to come and share in this wonderful celebration.
