Bristol Police Log: Local cops have typical week of activity

BRISTOL — Bristol police on Dec. 20 investigated a report of a person falling off a bike and allegedly sustaining an injury on Mountain Street.

Police checked that area and could not find the person.

In other activity from Dec. 18 to 24, the Bristol Police Department:

• Conducted foot and vehicle patrols throughout the village area, including the Mountain, North and Main Street areas in the vicinity of Bristol Elementary School and the town park.

Mark Benton exhibits paintings at WalkOver Gallery

Local artist Mark Benton poses the question: “Rural Industry: An Embellishment or Blemish on the Landscape?” In a series of eight oil paintings, all of which are untitled but many of which are recognizable locations, the artist takes his inquiry to the rural industrial landscape.

“I began this series by simply being caught in the moment,” he said, “prevalently a melancholy moment of catching the light at just the right angle reflected off a lonely piece of utilitarian metal.”

Mount Abraham forum set for Saturday, January 6

BRISTOL — A group of citizens from the Five Town area will host a community forum to share ideas and discuss the future of the district’s middle and high school on Saturday, Jan. 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Bristol Elementary School in Bristol.

The goal for this forum is to get the whole Five-Town Community actively engaged and empowered in reshaping the school, to hear from people in the community about their ideas about how to make the school a community asset and to bring out the range of concerns and thoughts community members have.

Bristol Police Log: Officers patrol area in cars, on foot

BRISTOL — Between Dec. 11 and 17, Bristol police conducted a lot of patrols in and around the village.

During that period police completed directed patrols on North Street, West Street, Lower Notch Road, Upper Notch Road, Notch Road, Briggs Hill at the intersection of Lincoln Road, and twice in an area a Bristol police log noted as “an area of concern within (the police) district.” The patrols resulted in a ticket for a stop sign violation and several warnings.

Board to consider lower $29.5M fix for Mount Abe

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School Board will meet early next month to consider a leaner, $29.5 million budget for an MAUHS renovation plan that would be put to five-town voters on Town Meeting Day in March.

Bristol Police Log: Police, wardens respond to report of shots fired

BRISTOL — Bristol police cooperated with Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife game wardens with gun incidents twice in two days earlier this month.

On Dec. 8 a Bristol police officer responded to a request for assistance looking into a report of shots fired on Plank Road in New Haven. The Bristol officer helped locate the vehicle of interest and a Vermont Fish and Game official conducted an investigation.

Grant to fund opiate education in Bristol-area grade schools

MIDDLEBURY — A federal grant will be used to “HELP” students in Bristol-area schools learn about and fight opiate addiction.

The $15,000 Regional Prevention Partnership grant, which flows through the Vermont Department of Health to the United Way of Addison County, will enhance UWAC’s “HELP” initiative.

Watershed Center's Solstice Celebration set for this Thursday

Bristol Police Log: Police assist senior with suspected phone scam

BRISTOL — On Dec. 2, a Bristol police officer met with an elderly citizen who had provided credit card information to a suspected phone scam. The officer assisted the citizen in contacting the bank to flag the transaction and cancel the citizen’s credit card.

The Bristol Police Department would like to remind citizens to refrain from providing personal banking information over the phone.

Vote on Mount Abe bond scheduled for Town Meeting Day: Committee asks architects for two proposals cheaper than $30M

BRISTOL — Five-town voters will get to cast their ballots on a third bond proposal to renovate the 50-year-old Mount Abraham Union High School facility on Town Meeting Day, and the amount requested will likely be under $30 million.

The Mount Abe Renovation Committee approved the March 6, 2018, vote at a meeting this past Wednesday.
