Moira Smiley comes home for roots revival

BRISTOL — Since she was 12-years-old, Moira Smiley has been recording people singing and speaking. “I’ve always been more of a listener than a speaker,” she said in an interview last month. It’s part of her mission as an artist: “to broadcast the notion that the human voice is vastly flexible and sensitive. And if we pay attention, we can understand each other on a deeper level.”

Bristol woman faces third embezzlement charge in seven years

BRISTOL — A Bristol woman, who recently completed a 21-month federal prison sentence, is facing her third embezzlement case in seven years following a report of money disappearing from a local market, court records show.

Billie LaFlam, 44, of Mountain Road has been ordered by judges to make more than $100,000 in restitution in recent years.

Village2Village Project to host benefit dinner April 1

BRISTOL — These three pictures are taken of the same little Ugandan boy, over six weeks. Emergency surgery and four weeks of enriched nutrition have saved three-year-old Elvis’s life. But he needs two more surgeries and a lot more food before he grows up into the healthy little boy that he can be. The “Old Bones,” a country and gospel music group, want to help.

Bristol lauds its departing town administrator

BRISTOL — Bristol Town Administrator Therese Kirby will not be renewing her contract when it runs out at the end of the fiscal year. Instead, Kirby, informed the selectboard late last month, she and her husband would be moving to Brookfield to be closer to friends and family and build a home there.

BRISTOL — Thirty-one Main Street in Bristol has seen its fair share of turnover. Most recently it was ND’s Bar, before that, Dan’s Place, Reggie’s and No-Knee’s. Now it’s Hatch 31.

Sisters Sarah and Kayla Wisell, and their cousin Roberta Sinnock opened Hatch 31’s doors two years ago this May with the help of their father/uncle Matt Wisell. They spent the first month renovating the place.

Man gets busted for DUI twice in one day in Bristol

BRISTOL — Local police worked with Vermont State Police to arrest a man in Bristol on March 10 — twice in one day.

On Friday, March 10, at around 1:31 a.m. police were called to Main Street on a report that Joshua Bley, 36, had approached a woman on the sidewalk and shouted at her from his vehicle. Bley, who was described by Bristol police as an Oregon resident and by state police as a Lincoln resident, allegedly yelled out to the female, “Don’t be afraid, don’t be afraid,” and attempted to engage her in conversation.

Mt. Abe's Ober to vie in state poetry competition

BRISTOL — Mount Abraham Union High School junior Casey Ober will be competing this Thursday, March 16, as one of 10 finalists in the state Poetry Out Loud competition.

“Casey has been enthusiastically participating in Poetry Out Loud for three years, so I was really excited to see her go on to the semifinals and then just overjoyed and proud that she’s going on to states,” said Colleen Kiley, English teacher and Poetry Out Loud advisor at Mount Abe.

Reagh Greenleaf Jr. is the founder of Irish-Americana band The County Down and creator of Vermont Celtic, a producer and retailer of art, apparel and gifts with Irish-American themes.

This month Greenleaf is sharing his music and products at more than 15 events celebrating Irish heritage throughout the state.

BRISTOL — Town Meeting Day in Bristol saw selectboard Chair Michelle Perlee retain her seat against challenger Lance Laliberte, approval of nearly $2 million in town spending and Bristol residents OK’d revised zoning regulations that were five years in the making. Sidewalk repair and school board salaries were the focus of the most discussion on the floor of town meeting Monday evening at Holley Hall.
