ANeSU schools dodge deep budget cuts

BRISTOL — Elementary schools in the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union are escaping some of the severe budget cuts wracking other schools in the county, but residents are still projected to see tax rate increases ranging from 3 to 13 cents in the five ANeSU towns if the schools’ budgets are OK’d by voters at Town Meeting Day in March.

Mt. Abe holds line on budget

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School board of directors on Tuesday agreed to send a $13,233,629 spending plan for the 2010-2011 school year to voters in the five towns in the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union on Town Meeting Day.

Total spending in the proposed budget is down 1.72 percent from the current year’s numbers, and matches this year’s educational spending dollar-for-dollar. Declining student enrollment, however, means the level-funded budget would still reflect a roughly 6 percent increase in per pupil spending.

Joint football team gets Bristol board OK

Posted on January 21, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

BRISTOL — Board members at Mount Abraham Union High School on Tuesday gave their OK to a brewing plan that would let students from Mount Abe and Vergennes Union High School suit up next fall for a cooperative football team.

If the agreement wins approval from the Vermont Principals’ Association, the body that governs cooperative sports agreements, students from the two schools could suit up on a single team.

If that comes to pass, the plan would be reviewed annually by both high schools, and either school could choose each year to opt out of the agreement.

New Bristol gravel rules head to selectboard

Posted on January 11, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

BRISTOL — Bristol town planners late in December brought to a close the months-long process of drafting a new gravel, sand and earth extraction ordinance for the town, shuttling the proposed document to the selectboard and setting up a possible Town Meeting Day vote on the new rules.

At a Dec. 23 public hearing, the Bristol Planning Commission took one last round of comments from the public on the proposed ordinance, which if approved would replace Section 526 in the town’s zoning bylaws.

Mt. Abe may trim three positions to cut costs

Posted on January 7, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

BRISTOL — Scrambling to cobble together an unexpected $475,000 in spending cuts, the Mount Abraham Union High School board of directors Tuesday reviewed preliminary cost savings that include eliminating three staff positions as well as trimming funding for maintenance and technology spending.

The cuts come after the board discovered last month that an accounting mistake would in many ways send administrators back to square one to draft the high school’s 2010-2011 spending plan, all while grappling with an unexpected deficit nearing $500,000.

Bristol Rescue at a crucial crossroads

BRISTOL — Faced with a diminishing number of volunteers, the Bristol Rescue Squad is at a crossroads: Unless the squad adds a paid staff member to its currently all-volunteer roster, President Brian Fox is worried the ambulance corps won’t be able to meet the demand for its services in the Five Town region.

Teacher puckers up for 'Peanut Butter' kiss

BRISTOL — With temperatures hovering near zero degrees, Peanut Butter’s breath sent little clouds of vapor out into the air beside the Bristol Elementary School gym Tuesday morning. The five-month-old Hereford calf from New Haven’s Cloverset Farm danced around the school’s parking lot, tossing the head upon which sat a festive little Santa’s cap.

In just a few minutes, Peanut Butter would trot through the door to the gym, eye the crowd of delighted schoolchildren, and then parade to the front of the gym for her big debut in the “Kiss the Cow” raffle at the elementary school.

Mt. Abe faces unexpected $475,000 in spending cuts

Posted on December 17, 2009 |
By Kathryn Flagg

BRISTOL — An accounting mistake sent up a major roadblock for the Mount Abraham Union High School board of directors this week, sending school board members and administrators back to square one to draft the high school’s 2010-2011 spending plan all while grappling with an unexpected additional $475,000 in necessary cuts.

Addison Northeast Supervisory Union Business Manager explained that an incomplete estimate in the early budget drafts put the “balance forward” number in the school budget much higher than is accurate.
