Bristol-area scenes on display in Jack Wendel exhibit

BRISTOL — Jack Wendel, a long time Bristol resident, painted many local scenes and homes in and around Bristol. His paintings are hanging in the homes of many individuals in the area.

The Bristol Friends of the Arts and The Bristol Historical Society are sponsoring a wonderful show and retrospective of his work at the WalkOver Gallery that will open with a reception this Friday. This is the first time a significant body of his work will be seen together.

Lathrop appeals Bristol gravel pit Act 250 permit denial

BRISTOL — The Lathrop Limited Partnership last week appealed the denial of an Act 250 permit for its proposed Bristol gravel pit.

As a result, activity in the company’s years-long effort to get approval to extract sand and gravel from a 65-acre lot off Rounds Road in Bristol returns to the Vermont Environmental Court.

Hikes in tax rates vary across ANeSU towns

BRISTOL — Property tax rates in the next fiscal year will increase in a range from less than 1 percent to 5.5 percent in the five towns of the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union (ANeSU).

The new rates will mean increases in taxes on residential properties valued at $200,000 ranging from $37 outside the Bristol police district to $304 in Starksboro.

Bristol quarry denied ACT 250 permit

BISTOL — The efforts by the Lathrop Limited Partnership and Jim Lathrop to site a gravel pit on a 65-acre tract off Notch Road and Rounds Road in Bristol were dealt a setback on Tuesday when the District 9 Environmental Commission denied the project an Act 250 permit.

The commission ruled the proposal, which has been tied up in permitting and litigation for around seven years, “would cause and result in a detriment to public health, safety or general welfare.”

Bristol village bridge closes for repairs

BRISTOL — The bridge across the New Haven River at South Street in the Bristol village closed for repairs Tuesday and will not open again until 2012 at the earliest, according to Bristol Town Administrator Bill Bryant.

The Vermont Agency of Transportation, known as VTrans, inspected the bridge last week as a follow up to an inspection last October.

'Stampede' tops $1M for CF research

BRISTOL — July in Bristol isn’t complete without the 5-kilometer race, country music radio and silent auction of the Three Day Stampede.

Over the past 17 years, the Stampede, which is an annual weekend fund-raiser for cystic fibrosis research, has raised over $1 million.

Bristol OKs leaner police budget on second try

BRISTOL — Bristol residents in the village police district approved the amended police department spending plan for fiscal year 2011 in a 25-16 paper ballot vote on Monday evening. The plan got the green light following an initial 20-19 vote to cut the proposed budget by a $10,000.

The approved spending plan stands at $362,653, with $304,303 to be raised by taxes on residents in the Bristol police district.

Youths to perform Shakespeare

BRISTOL — Shakespeare’s “Comedy of Errors” tells the tale of identical twins, both named Antipholus, and their respective identical twin slaves, both named Dromio. Antipholus of Syracuse and his slave Dromio of Syracuse travel to the ancient city of Ephesus to find their long lost brothers, from whom they were separated at birth. When the two sets of twins are reunited, it sparks a comic series of arrests and false accusations brought about by the constant mistaking of one brother for another.

Stampede' returns to Bristol this weekend

BRISTOL — Organizers of Bristol’s annual Three Day Stampede, a fund-raiser for cystic fibrosis research, announced a few weeks ago that they’ve raised over $1 million in their 20 years of fund-raising.

But that doesn’t mean they’re going to let up on their efforts. This year’s event kicks off Friday at 8 a.m. and will last until Sunday evening.

Bristol Act 250 hearing wraps up

BRISTOL — The District 1 Act 250 commission on Tuesday afternoon drew to a close the public testimony portion of a hearing to determine whether a proposed Bristol gravel pit conforms with the state’s land use and development law.

The hearing opened on June 28, and ran four days in total.
