BRISTOL — The Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center, Vermont Community College and Vermont Adult Learning will see a fourth adult learning center joining their ranks in the near future.

But the Hogback Community College, based in the forests of the Five-Town region around Bristol, is not like other continuing education centers. For one thing, it has no building.

And students enrolled in the Hogback Community College won’t be receiving grades or even credit for the courses they take.

BRISTOL — On Feb. 10, a public meeting will be held in Bristol to discuss the town’s application to the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation for two variances concerning the operation of its Pine Street landfill.

According to Town Administrator Bill Bryant, the state has changed the way in which it interprets its regulations regarding the operations of municipal landfills. The new interpretation would require the town of Bristol to build enough money into the budget to cover closure fund obligations — an amount that nears $1 million, Bryant said.

BRISTOL — What’s got students at Bristol Elementary School staying after class for hours each day?

The answer lies in just four letters: B-A-S-K.

This fall, the two-decade-old Bristol After School Kids program, known locally as BASK, received a 21st century makeover. New workshops like acoustic guitar lessons, yoga and tech club are getting kids involved and excited about the program that has been ramped up thanks to a five-year, 21st Century Learning grant that Bristol Elementary was awarded this school year.

BRISTOL — The snow-covered field behind the red schoolhouse off Hardscrabble Road in Bristol was filled with the sounds of industry and eager voices Monday morning. A young boy wielded an axe as another stood by critiquing his stance.

“Legs wide so you don’t chop off your feet,” the second boy said, and the first boy brought the axe down deliberately on a piece of wood, splitting it down the middle. A young girl took the splinters to the outdoor cob oven for kindling.

BRISTOL — Will Parini has the contract negotiation blues.

Parini, a new music teacher at Bristol and Starksboro elementary schools, stood up in front of a nearly full auditorium of Addison Northeast Supervisory Union teachers, board members and residents at Mount Abraham Union High School last Wednesday night and sang about the woes of the impasse reached on Dec. 16.

Parini was the last to speak in the discussion leading up to the negotiation committee’s vote to impose the ANeSU school boards’ final proposal as the terms for the 2010-2011 teachers’ contract.

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School board is slashing an additional $174,000 from its 2011-2012 educational spending plan after receiving word this week that the Bristol school will post a projected $111,000 deficit this year.

A recently completed audit revealed a significant drop in Mount Abe’s projected revenues for next year that forced Co-principals Andy Kepes and Leon Wheeler to go back and make more spending cuts on top of the $266,767 that was eliminated earlier in the budget planning process.
