Coyote hunt attracts protestors: Contest proceeds with limited success

BRISTOL — The coyote hunting contest scheduled for this past weekend by a Bristol man came off as planned. Plenty of protesters showed up, as well as almost three dozen hunters.

The only thing missing was a plentitude of coyotes.

Todd Baldwin, organizer of the “Wile E. Coyote Hunt 2017,” said the results were “not good”; only four coyote carcasses were turned in from a total of 35 registered hunters. Two of the coyotes were bagged in Rutland County, one in Panton and one in Starksboro; the largest was 42 pounds.

Perlee, Michelle.jpg

BRISTOL — Come Town Meeting Day on March 7, Bristol voters will be looking at a slate of candidates largely unopposed and largely made up of incumbents.

An important exception will be the choice between selectboard Chair Michelle Perlee and first-time candidate Lance Laliberte — both competing for Perlee’s three-year seat on the Bristol selectboard.

Aside from the Perlee-Laliberte race, there are no other contests on the Bristol ballot.

Mount Abe fix-it list: 'more than a facelift'

BRISTOL — “It’s a well-built school. It’s a steel-frame building. It’s got a brick façade to it. It holds its heat very well,” Alden Harwood said of the Mount Abraham Union High School, which opened to students in 1969.

“But it’s an old building. It’s a 1960s-vintage building that needs more than a facelift,” he cautioned. “We’re starting to see many things that are at the end of their useful life.”

BRISTOL — Though Dale Helms has been making fine furniture for almost three and a half decades, he doesn’t call himself an artist. I know, it’s hard to believe. It’s even more unbelievable when you find out how much goes into every piece of his furniture. From a simple cheeseboard to a grand chair, dresser or bed, Helms has given thought to every inch of the piece; everything is done with intention.

BRISTOL — Keypads on our computers, smart phones or tablets might dominate a lot of our communication these days, but the good old fashioned pen hasn’t gone out of style either. Especially not the hand carved wooden pens made by Jim Cunningham in Bristol.

Early in his woodworking career, Cunningham ran a rustic handmade furniture company and was a member of Vermont WoodNet — a local group of woodcrafters. “WoodNet was a good group to help me get going,” he said.
