BRISTOL — At a selectboard meeting Monday, town officials in Bristol were tallying up the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene, exploring plans for more infrastructure repairs and discussing how much help they could get from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

“All the roads are back open and we’re working with FEMA to put in all of our costs,” said Chairman Joel Bouvier.

But exactly what those costs will add up to is still unknown.

BRISTOL — The idea to sculpt an eagle from copper, steel, brass and other materials hatched at Mount Abraham Union middle and high school in 2009.

Last week, some of the more than 30 students who helped create the image of Mount Abe’s school mascot capped the two-year effort by unveiling the proud bird, now perched atop the school’s main entrance.

“What these students have done is awe inspiring,” said Jim Brown, a technology arts teacher and project organizer.

BRISTOL — After two lengthy Bristol Zoning Board of Adjustment (ZBA) meetings, the future permitting of the mixed-use residential park deemed Bristol Works remains up in the air.

Owners of the property at the corner of Bristol’s Munsill Avenue and Pine Street plan to use the 5.5-acre site to host a range of uses, including office space for the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union, a prospective health center, and manufacturing space for energy technology and value-added food products.

Nude man in Bristol not busted

Posted on September 15, 2011 |
By Andrew Stein

BRISTOL — When a blue minivan with Florida license plates pulled into the Bristol Maplefields on West Street at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 7, onlookers could barely believe their eyes: A male driver got out of the car completely unclothed.

“The only things he was wearing was a pair of sandals and a credit card,” Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs reported.

On seeing the nude man, a bystander immediately called the police. But contrary to what the caller and some fellow bystanders apparently expected, the police did not arrest the man.

BRISTOL — An Addison County man who originally offered police information on a break-in at a Bristol convenience store eventually was implicated in the crime when police found images of a suspect who looked remarkably like the man on a store surveillance video.

On Aug. 26, at a hair past midnight, Bristol Police Officer Randy Crowe responded to the alarm at the Champlain Farms convenience store on West Street in Bristol. Crowe found the new glass door — installed two days earlier — smashed.

Bristol armadillo_2260[1].jpg

BRISTOL — It is unfortunately not unusual to encounter dead critters along the rural roads of Vermont. Skunks, raccoons, squirrels porcupines seem to be the primary victims, with the occasional deer mixed in.

But nothing could have prepared Bristol resident Carl and Caroline Engvall for the sight they witnessed in their Cold Spring Road yard last Thursday: A dead armadillo.

Bristol pays the price for Irene's devastation

Posted on September 3, 2011 |
By Andrew Stein

BRISTOL — Selectboard chairman Joel Bouvier late last week indicated that progress was being made in Bristol after Tropical Storm Irene tore up chunks of the town, but he noted that it came with a big price tag.

“Our biggest loss was Lincoln Road, the main road to Lincoln,” Bouvier said on Thursday. “We lost about 200 feet and that’s probably going to be in excess of $75,000 (to repair). Town-wide we had about $75,000 to $100,000 worth of damage.”
