Bristol resident tapped to fill open spot on Mt. Abe board

BRISTOL — Bristol resident Allison Sturtevant has a head for numbers, and that, in part, helped her win selection to replace a Bristol member of the Mount Abraham Union High School Board who had resigned mid-term.

Sturtevant, appointed by the Bristol Elementary School Board on Monday, will join Mount Abe board members Doug DeWitt, Carol Eldridge, Alicia Kurth and Kris Pearsall in representing Bristol on the 13-member school board, which represents all five towns in the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union.

Bristol tax rate up 1.5 cents

BRISTOL — Most Bristol homeowners will see their property taxes rise less than 1 percent this year.

The Bristol selectboard on Monday approved a fiscal year 2016 residential property tax rate of $2.3471 per $100 in property value, an increase of roughly one and a half cents, or 0.68 percent, from the current rate of $2.3312 for FY 2015.

The new rate translates into a property tax increase of around $31.80 on a $200,000 home. The nonresidential tax rate increased by three and a half cents to $2.3101 per $100 in property value.

Gateway Players to perform Shakespeare comedy on the green in Bristol

BRISTOL — Are you ready for a witty battle of the sexes comedy? Well, who isn’t.

And why not go to the top — Shakespeare himself.

Add to this the charm of a balmy mid-August evening on the Bristol town green and you’ve got it — Bristol Gateway Players’ next offering: “Much Ado About Nothing,” Master William’s hilarious send-up of girls and boys fighting about love.

The show will be staged en plein air this Thursday through Sunday, Aug. 13-16.

Landfill was more than a dump to many; Bristol sees passing of an era

BRISTOL — For the past 20 years, scale attendant George Smith, 89, has made taking the trash to the dump an extraordinary experience.

Bristol residents came out in droves last Saturday to thank Smith for his long service to Bristol, shake hands, and say farewell to the town’s landfill and to Smith’s quietly charismatic presence and welcoming smile.

Saturday, Aug. 1, was the Bristol town landfill’s last day.

Bristol ready for next steps in trash, recycling

BRISTOL — After receiving notice from the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources last August that the Bristol town landfill was in violation of some state rules, town officials scrambled to plan for the dump’s closure, figured how to pay for that process and set up a new regimen for residents to dispose of their trash and recycling.

Barre woman cited for murder in death of Cousino in I-89 crash

BRISTOL — Vermont State Police have cited a Barre woman with second-degree murder after concluding that she was suicidal when she allegedly deliberately crossed the center line of Interstate 89 in Richmond last Thursday, July 30, to strike an oncoming vehicle driven by a former Bristol resident, who died at the scene from his injuries.

UPDATE: Former Bristol resident Cousino killed in crash

BRISTOL — A former Bristol resident was killed on this past Thursday in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 89 in the town of Richmond.

Vermont State Police said Brendon Cousino, 30, a resident of Richmond, was killed in the crash on Thursday evening. 

Police are asking for assistance from the public as they investigate the crash.

It was at around 7:27 p.m. on July 30 that VSP and other emergency departments responded to a serious crash in the northbound lanes of Interstate 89, near mile marker 79, an area just north of Exit 11 in Richmond.

Bristol's Three-Day Stampede nets $120,000 for cystic fibrosis

BRISTOL — The 2015 edition of Bristol’s Three-Day Stampede Toward the Cure for Cystic Fibrosis raised more than $120,000.

Attendees of the event this past Friday, Saturday and Sunday enjoyed good weather, fun, a lot of nifty bargains and activities, as well as the satisfaction of knowing their donations and purchases will help fund research into what is a complex, chronic and often deadly disease that primarily affects the lungs and digestive system. CF touches several Addison County residents, and roughly 70,000 people worldwide.

Tour de Farms gears up for bicycle ride

BRISTOL — The Tour de Farms is one of Vermont’s oldest cycling farm tours and is set in Addison County’s rolling farmlands — voted New England’s best biking by Yankee magazine. Over 3,000 people have ridden the tour over the last 7 years in Shoreham and Orwell.

Vehicle stolen in Bristol on Tuesday is found in New Jersey

BRISTOL — Vermont State Police have charged an Essex man in the theft of a car from a Bristol residence on Tuesday, July 28. Authorities recovered the vehicle on Wednesday, July 29, in New Jersey.

Police have cited Matthew Coppola, 24, who is currently being held in Essex County, N.J., for lack of $30,000 bail, according to police. Coppola will be extradited to Vermont in the future to answer to further charges, police said.
