Grocery service builds the Vermont brand

BRISTOL — For hundreds of years, Vermont has been a name known regionally, nationally and even internationally for its food products — butter, cheese, milk, maple syrup and apples. But out-of-state residents couldn’t get their groceries directly from Vermont.

Now that’s changing with the help of businesses like Bristol’s Graze, which delivers farm-fresh food from Vermont to homes in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Bristol man pitches his way to world tournament

BRISTOL — Since his youth, Brian Simmons has lived, walked, breathed and thrown horseshoes.

After some health setbacks several years ago, the Bristol resident this week is heading to Louisiana to compete in the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association (NHPA) World Championships, where he is looking to regain a world title he won twice early in the decade.

Bristol mulls a new date for police district meeting

BRISTOL — The Bristol selectboard is exploring the possibility of moving the annual meeting of the Bristol police district from its usual late May date to the annual Town Meeting Day in March. The change could take place as soon as next year.

At their Monday meeting, selectboard members discussed the idea with Police Chief Kevin Gibbs, who supports the move.

Planner explains new Bristol town plan draft

BRISTOL — After months of changes to the town plan update, the Bristol Planning Commission unveiled its latest draft last week. In response to the draft and its editing process, the Independent  has received numerous questions and concerns. To try and clear up several issues, reporter Andrew Stein met with planning commission Chairman Tom Wells after the planners’ Tuesday, July 12, meeting. Here’s what Wells had to say.

Bristol planning commission eyes Sept. 20 public hearing

BRISTOL — The Bristol Planning Commission moved quickly through the new town draft at its Tuesday meeting where planners came to consensus on language, data and formatting used in sections one through 11.

During the session there was little debate and public comments were few, but the planners decided to aim for a Sept. 20 public hearing to gather input on the new town plan draft.

Bristol rolls out revised draft of plan

BRISTOL — After five months of heavy editing, the Bristol Planning Commission has released a new draft of the town plan for the first time since it took a public poll on Town Meeting Day about gravel extraction, which found town sentiment solidly against language in the commission’s February 9 draft.

Little League games come to Bristol

GRANVILLE — Since the 1960s, Granville’s tiny town office has been on a small plot of land with no running water.

Last Wednesday, Granville celebrated the grand opening of its renovated town hall and new town office, located in the town’s former schoolhouse. Town officials said Sen. Patrick Leahy was instrumental in landing the low-interest loans and grants that allowed them to complete the project, and though Leahy was in Washington at the time, Marcelle Leahy, his wife, spoke on his behalf at the ceremony on Route 100.

Strike up the band! Fourth of July festivities abound

BRISTOL — Decorate your outhouse, fire up the grill, whip out your flag and get ready for this year’s Fourth of July celebrations.

A full slate of activities has been prepared at venues around the region, including concerts, parades and a singular competition in Bristol known as the outhouse races. Oh, and of course, there will be fireworks.

VBT pedals into fifth decade

BRISTOL — When John Freidin founded Vermont Bicycle Tours in the early 1970s he never imagined that 40 years later the company would grow to annually serve 5,000 travelers in 26 countries. He didn’t know of any businesses at the time that were based on bicycle touring.

A young Middlebury College professor of history, Freidin recently recalled that he was trying to escape the world of academia. On the suggestion of a colleague, he and a fellow professor took an overnight bike trip through Vermont.
