Mediator tells embattled ANeSU to go for training

BRISTOL — A federal mediator has recommended that the superintendent of the Bristol-area schools and the teachers in those schools take part in training to warm up the cool relationship between the parties.

The Addison Northeast Supervisory Union Executive Committee and the Addison Northeast Education Association teachers union (ANEDA) posted a joint statement and the recommendations of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Services (FMCS) mediator on the ANeSU website this past Thursday.

Ribbon campaign in Bristol is visual cue to think on cancer

BRISTOL — Around 40 teal-colored ribbons hanging from lampposts all around the Bristol village center announce that Turn the Towns Teal has come to Bristol. September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and the Turn the Towns Teal campaign aims to save women’s lives by “tealing” towns in all 50 states — and raising awareness of the disease and its symptoms.

Ribbons (biodegradable and made in the USA) stay up for all of September and are then removed.

Future of Bristol-area schools to be discussed at forum

BRISTOL — Residents, teachers, students and other community members are invited to an open public forum to discuss the future of the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union’s public schools on Monday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m. at the Mount Abraham Union High School cafeteria.

This forum is sponsored by the Friends of the Five Town Schools (FFTS), a new group committed to supporting students, teachers and families to create vibrant schools in the Bristol area and to help give voice to the local community in the school system.

BRISTOL — The Tour de Farms is one of Vermont’s oldest cycling farm tours and is set in Addison County’s rolling farmlands — voted New England’s best biking by Yankee magazine. Over 3,000 people have ridden the tour over the last 7 years in Shoreham and Orwell.

Bristol school board position open

BRISTOL — The Bristol Elementary School Board is seeking a Bristol resident interested in serving on the five-member elementary school board as a result of a recent vacancy. Sheryl Thurber has submitted her letter of resignation to the board. Her term will expire in March 2016.

Mt. Abe taps New York youth advocate for vice principal

BRISTOL — Come Tuesday, Sept. 1, newly hired assistant principal David Ford should be walking the halls of Mount Abraham Union High School.

Ford, who was offered the job after the Mount Abe board approved his hiring on Aug. 18, will join Interim Principal Carol Fenimore and Assistant Principal Ellen Repstad on the school’s three-person administrative team. Fenimore began her tenure July 1; Ellen Repstad, formerly a long-time literacy instructor at Mount Abe, is now in her fourth year as assistant principal.

State police say man assaulted his female companion

BRISTOL — A South Burlington man pleaded innocent on Aug. 26 in Addison Superior Court, criminal division, to five separate misdemeanor charges in connection with an alleged domestic assault at the Green Mountain Family Campground in Bristol on Aug. 25.

Landslide! Bristol wants to join county's waste district

BRISTOL — Bristol residents overwhelmingly voted to join the Addison County Solid Waste Management District (ACSWMD) in Tuesday’s election.

“We’re thrilled that people turned out to vote and supported what the selectboard feels is the right decision for Bristol,” said Therese Kirby, Bristol town administrator.

The town voted 173 to 8 in favor of joining ACSWMD and 172 to 8, with one spoiled ballot, to ratify the admission agreement worked out between the selectboard and ACSWMD this past July.

Bristol to vote Tuesday on joining trash district

BRISTOL — Bristol residents will vote next Tuesday on joining the Addison County Solid Waste Management District. Voting will be by Australian ballot, and the polls at Holley Hall will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Aug 25.

Voters will face two questions. First, should Bristol join the Addison County Solid Waste Management District, which manages the garbage transfer station in Middlebury and other solid waste issues for all of the county except Bristol and Salisbury.
