Bristol sewer and water rates to go up July 1

BRISTOL — Bristol water and sewer rates will go up July 1 — water by a single-digit percentage, sewer by double digits.

Current water rates have been in place since 2013.

“At a certain point if you don’t increase rates you’re just kicking that can down the road,” explained Town Administrator Therese Kirby. “Prices go up because of inflation, electricity goes up, supply rates go up, your contract terms go up. Things increase. So rates need to increase to cover the operation and maintenance of the system.”

Mount Abe renovation committee wants to match school's needs to community's pocketbook

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School Renovation Committee is wrestling with how to get the most bang for the buck when refurbishing the nearly 50-year-old high school building in Bristol.

At its May 15 meeting, the committee also strove to establish priorities within a price tag the community would support.

Bristol Scout pulls Holley Hall kiosk plan

BRISTOL — An Eagle Scout project to construct a kiosk with an electronic message board in front of Bristol’s Holley Hall has been cancelled.

Town Administrator Therese Kirby informed the Bristol selectboard Monday night that Bristol teenager Victor Hinojosa, who wanted to build the kiosk in part to Eagle rank, had contacted her over the weekend to say that he would be pursuing a different community service project to attain the Boy Scouts of America’s highest rank.

ANESD Renaming Committee announces five finalists

BRISTOL — The Addison Northeast School District is one step closer to a new name.

Tuesday night the ANESD Renaming Committee pored over the results of its online and phone survey, in which all members of the community were encouraged to contribute potential names for the unified school district created by the November 2016 vote.

“It’s not every day you get a chance to rename a school district,” said Superintendent Patrick Reen.

Bristol architect receives award

BRISTOL — A home produced by Elizabeth Herrmann Architecture + Design of Bristol was one of six winners selected in an annual competition sponsored by Marvin Windows and Doors.

An independent panel of esteemed architects chose the 2017 winners. The judges selected winners based on projects that demonstrated excellence in solution-driven design, classical beauty, innovative use of windows and sustainability.

Local high school students make television PSAs about opiates

BRISTOL — Teams of students from three Addison County high schools have spent the past two months learning about the dangers of addiction to opiates and heroin. Using that knowledge, each of those teams has crafted a proposed public service announcement to spread the word about the opiate epidemic.

On Monday, May 22, the teams will learn which among them produced the winning Public Service Announcement (PSA) that will be aired on local TV.

Bristol-area school district is looking for a new name

BRISTOL — The voters of the five-town school district last fall voted to consolidate governance and budgeting, now residents of Starksboro, New Haven, Monkton, Lincoln and Bristol and being asked to suggest a new name for the school district.

The unified school board has formed a Renaming Committee that is seeking name suggestions through an online survey that can be taken here: www.surveymonkey.com/r/ANESD_Name. The committee is looking for responses by end of day May 5.

Holley Hall kiosk project triggers debate in Bristol

BRISTOL — An Eagle Scout project to construct an information kiosk in front of Holley Hall in downtown Bristol has drawn both praise and criticism, often from the same quarters.

The project also shows the disconnect that can occur when selectboard priorities and processes leave some townsfolk wondering how or where to weigh in on an issue of community importance.

When Eagle Scout hopeful Victor Hinojosa presented his kiosk proposal to the Bristol selectboard at its April 17 meeting, board members quickly approved the proposal.

Bristol Park Dental selected for community-based externships

BRISTOL — The University of New England College of Dental Medicine (UNE CDM) has announced that Bristol Park Dental of Bristol has been selected as a community-based externship site. Students in the inaugural graduating class at the UNE CDM are completing the final component of their program: participation in the college’s first community-based externships around New England.
