Local representatives help override budget veto

MONTPELIER — The overwhelming majority of Addison County lawmakers on Tuesday voted with the majority in a successful override of Gov. James Douglas’s budget veto, thereby setting in stone a spending plan for fiscal year 2010.

The House voted 100 to 50 — the bare minimum two-thirds majority necessary — to override Douglas’s veto of the $4.5 billion spending plan. It was the first budget veto in the state’s history.

County gears up for six Memorial Day parades

ADDISON COUNTY and BRANDON — Just as Memorial Day weekend signals the start of summer, it also marks a time for parades. Addison County residents will have plenty of options if they want to watch — or take part in — a parade. Marchers, floats and politicians will be seen in six local venues this coming Sunday and Monday.

Orwell will ring in the holiday with its traditional Sunday afternoon parade, which kicks off at 1:30 p.m. The 45-minute parade will feature local Shriners, the Catamount Pipe Band, four American Legion color guards and the Fair Haven Union High School band.

In the digital age, booksellers adapt business to stay afloat

ADDISON COUNTY — It’s not just bricks-and-mortar bookstores — which have long faced competition from online booksellers like Amazon.com — that are in trouble these days.

Books themselves could be on the way out.

Last week’s tech buzz swirled around the Kindle DX, Amazon’s electronic reader that some technology enthusiasts predict could mean the death of the book as we know it.

Vermonters prepare for possible spread of swine flu

ADDISON COUNTY — As reported cases of the swine influenza cropped up around the country, Vermont remained unaffected at midweek by the airborne, contagious disease that reached epidemic proportions in Mexico. Still, local and state officials said they were on the lookout for the disease should it spread, and one local high school stepped up precautions after a student trip returned from south of the border last week.

Addison County gears up to 'Green Up"

ADDISON COUNTY — Captain Green Up will touch down in Middlebury on Friday once again, kicking off a flurry of spring cleaning around Addison County and throughout Vermont.

The super hero, clad in the telltale Green Up bags used to collect litter every year, will lead roughly 300 Middlebury-area middle school students through the streets.

Dairy in Crisis - Part 4: State's agricultural landscape changes as number of dairies dwindles

ADDISON COUNTY — Faced with record-low milk prices, 24 dairy farms in the state have gone under since December, according to the Agency of Agriculture. Two of those farms were in Addison County — bringing the county’s total to 170.

Ten years ago, Addison County boasted 321 dairy farms.
