ADDISON COUNTY — The number of low-income students in Vermont’s schools is on the rise, and teachers and administrators reacting to these shifting demographics are struggling to close the achievement gap between low-income students and their higher-income peers.

Schools in the Addison County area, like those around the state, are trying different strategies to approach the problem.

Changes to Current Use proposed

Posted on February 1, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

ADDISON COUNTY — Budget woes could spell major changes for the state’s Use Value Appraisal Program, better known as “Current Use,” which is credited with preserving millions of acres of Vermont forestland and farmland from development.

Right now, the 32-year-old program is facing a one-year moratorium on new enrollments, higher penalties for landowners who withdraw land from Current Use to be developed, and a new property transfer tax that would be more in line with the rates applied to other property sales in the state.

Rural towns push for broadband Internet

ADDISON COUNTY — Ten years ago, fast Internet access was more luxury than necessity. Web sites were simpler, people purchased music on CDs instead of online, and YouTube didn’t exist. But times have changed.

Internet access is quickly becoming a necessity of modern life. In the more remote areas of Vermont, this has created problems for people like professional data analyst Ed Nelbach.

“I’m miles behind those with broadband access,” said Nelbach, a Hancock resident.

Flu vaccine shortages end

ADDISON COUNTY — After months of delays, local pharmacies and health care organizations are reporting that more supplies of the seasonal and H1N1 “swine” flu vaccines have finally trickled into the county.

Though public concern over the H1N1 flu seems to have died down in the wake of the October and November surge in illness, epidemiologists are predicting that another spike in illnesses could hit in a few months, and health care workers are encouraging patients to be immunized against both strains of the flu.

ADDISON COUNTY — For 20-year-old Galen Helms, his love affair with farming was born out of necessity: The Monkton resident needed a job.

This was four years ago, when Helms was a student at Mount Abraham Union High School in Bristol. He tromped down the road, knocked on a door and landed a summer job at Eugenie Doyle’s organic vegetable and berry farm.

“It evolved into me really loving the work,” Helms said.

He returned to the Monkton farm year after to year to plant and weed and harvest. Ask him just what, exactly, it is he loves about the work, and he’ll tell you: everything.

MONTPELIER — Gov. James Douglas threw down the gauntlet in his final state-of-the-state address on Thursday, urging lawmakers to enact a series of initiatives he believes will advance economic development and reduce school spending.

Douglas, a Middlebury Republican, pulled no punches in an address that took just over 40 minutes to deliver and was interrupted 10 times by applause from a General Assembly heavily dominated by Democrats.

Holiday sales come in strong

ADDISON COUNTY — The anecdotal reports from Main Street this year are promising: A last-minute influx of shoppers, and an uptick of interest in the “shop local” movement, meant many local retailers saw sales increase in December over the same month in 2008.

That good news came late in the month, though, following what was for many businesses a sluggish two weeks at the start of the holiday season.

“It was pretty soft the first week and a half to two weeks,” said John Wallace, the owner of the Autumn Gold jewelry shop in Middlebury. “The end just burst wide open the last two weeks.”

17 county bridges face heightened state scrutiny

Posted on January 4, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

ADDISON COUNTY — Seventeen Addison County bridges will fall under increased scrutiny in coming years as the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) complies with a federal ramp-up in bridge safety efforts.

The 17 bridges are on a list of around 300 spans across the state now considered “scour critical,” or particularly vulnerable to erosion during high-water events that can eat away the footings or foundation of a bridge.

Public input sought for design of Champlain Bridge at Jan. 4 meeting (UPDATED)

Posted on January 4, 2010 |
By John S. McCright

VERGENNES — Turns out the design for the replacement for the Champlain Bridge actually has yet to be set in stone, so to speak.

The Dec. 15 recommendation by the Lake Champlain Bridge Project’s Public Advisory Committee (PAC) to go with option No. 6 of the six bridge designs presented by officials form the New York and Vermont transportation departments — and the overwhelming concurrence with that choice by the public in an online survey last month — are just recommendations.
