ADDISON COUNTY — No, local experts said, the county’s real estate market is not booming, an opinion that probably will surprise nobody.

At the same time, appraisers said the news is not all bad, especially for owners of homes in more affordable price ranges.

The latest data from the Northern New England Real Estate Network, according to Vergennes appraiser Bill Benton, show a median sales price in Addison County of $205,000, down just 2.4 percent from 2009 despite lingering economic woes.

Editor’s note: This story was provided by U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Whitney Hughes.

PARWAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan — When U.S. Army Warrant Officer Caitlin Purinton lifted up the thin blue cloth of the burka, she would not have been surprised to see despair in the eyes of the woman underneath who spends most of her life hidden under the garment that conceals her from head to toe.

ADDISON COUNTY — High-speed winds ripped through the county last Wednesday, knocking down trees and limbs and leaving thousands of residents without power.

MIDDLEBURY — It’s no secret that when people are struggling to find jobs, the demand increases for continuing education; retraining classes, certificate programs and colleges often see jumps in applications.

Over the past two years, for instance, Vermonters have been flocking to Community College of Vermont’s classes in droves to a record 7,300 part-time, full-time and non-degree students statewide, according to CCV Executive Dean Susan Henry.

“CCV has been growing by double digit rates,” she said.

ADDISON COUNTY — According to local vendors, Megan Price’s new book “Vermont Wild” has been selling like hotcakes.

The book is a conglomeration of 13 standalone stories told from the perspective of Vermont game warden of 32 years, Eric Nuse of Johnson. Nuse teamed up with Price, a Fair Haven resident, over a year ago to put his stories in a form that would be digestible for readers both young and old.

ADDISON COUNTY — For Russ Cary and a number of other Vermont farmers, the dairy business is looking up.

The Bridport dairy farmer milks 130 cows on the four-year-old Cary Family Farm. Last week Cary signed a contract with the Organic Valley milk cooperative. In recent months, Organic Valley and Horizon Organic, the two organic dairy processors that buy from Vermont farmers, have begun seeking new farms to add to their rosters.

County farms yield abundant harvest

ADDISON COUNTY — Crop yields were looking good this year for Addison County farmers — by some accounts, better than they have been in many years.

Craig Miner, county Farm Service Agency executive, said that from what he saw, nearly the entire growing season spelled good luck for local farmers.

“It was an excellent season — probably one of the best in recent years,” he said.

Ben Gleason, of Gleason’s Grains in Bridport, agreed. He said the combination of just enough rain and more warmth than last summer meant that his crops did well.

SUDBURY — After a number of failed moves to possibly merge their elementary school with schools in neighboring towns, Sudbury residents will be asked to close the Sudbury Country School. A number of parents recently delivered a petition demanding that the school be closed and the town tuition its youngest students to other schools.
At a special school district meeting on Dec. 6, town voters will decide whether to authorize the Sudbury school board to close the school and send students to other public schools beginning in September of 2011.
