ADDISON COUNTY — Addison County candidates for Vermont House and Senate seats are apparently expending more shoe-leather than money thus far in their campaigns.

Phone calls to district town clerks in which there are races reveal that only a few candidates raised or spent more than the requisite $500 needed to trigger the filing of campaign finance forms by last Thursday’s deadline.

By Andrea Suozzo

BURLINGTON — When someone in the United States presses the “Send Payment” button to donate to a large charitable organization working overseas, it is difficult to track exactly how much is going to the organization’s upkeep and how much is going to on-the-ground work.

Bridging the Divide, a new, Burlington-based organization, is seeking to change all that.

ADDISON COUNTY — On the evening of June 28, a black bear demolished a steel fence at Paul and Kristin Francoeur’s home on Shackett Road in Leicester, following the scent of grain that had been freshly laid out for the Francoeurs’ alpacas.

Kristin Francoeur explained that alpacas are protective of their food, and it appears that when one of the animals stood up to the bear he hit it with a fatal blow that broke its neck and burst an artery.

ADDISON COUNTY — Four years after they got married, Sharon O’Daniel and Jason Fearon took a risk. The couple had good jobs in Boston, but they decided to move back to Addison County in June 2007, regardless of whether they had jobs waiting for them.

O’Daniel had given birth to their son Grey, and the couple knew they wanted to raise their family in the Vergennes area, where they both grew up.

“We couldn’t imagine raising a child in a city or suburbs,” O’Daniel said. “Vermont’s atmosphere, attitude, pride and people are what we wanted to share with our kids.”

Jobless benefits bill hits skids

Posted on June 28, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

ADDISON COUNTY — A months-long push to extend emergency unemployment benefits to out-of-work Americans stalled in Congress late last week after a united GOP caucus kept Senate Democrats short of the 60 votes needed to push their bill through.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ office estimated that 1.2 million Americans are already experiencing a cutoff in unemployment benefits because of the Republican filibuster, including an estimated 121 workers in Vermont. Another 860 Vermonters face a cutoff in benefits on July 10 unless Congress extends benefits.
