Local businesses making ends meet

ADDISON COUNTY — None of a wide range of business owners, executives and experts recently asked about the area’s economy were ready to announce that happy days are here again: Their attitudes ranged from cautiously optimistic to skeptical, but hopeful.

In a statement echoed by many interviewed, Waybury Inn co-owner Joe Sutton said he and others in the hospitality sector have adapted to flat or modest growth.

“Basically, even is the new good,” Sutton said. “The general concept is staying at par ... or up a little bit is OK, and you have to watch your expenditures.”

ADDISON COUNTY — Several roads across the county were closed on Friday morning due to flooding brought on by the heavy rainfall the area received at the end of last week.

A stretch of Route 116 in Bristol was shut down Friday morning, as were sections of River Road in New Haven and Route 7 near McConnell Road in Brandon. As waters continued to rise, a section of Three Mile Bridge Road from Route 7 to Halladay Road in Middlebury was closed, and a portion of Route 125 in Ripton was reduced to one lane.

Two decades on, farmers weigh organic standards

Posted on September 16, 2010 |
By Andrea Suozzo

ADDISON COUNTY — Since the passage 20 years ago this week of the 1990 Farm Bill, which established a National Organic Program (NOP), the demand for healthy, sustainably produced food has skyrocketed — and with it, the demand for organically certified products.

Consumers nowadays — especially those in cities — don’t always know how or where their food was produced, so organic certifications give them more information to use when making purchasing decisions, said Vermont Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy while marking the anniversary this week.

Late blight threat at bay, for now

Posted on August 26, 2010 |
By Andrea Suozzo

ADDISON COUNTY — As late summer draws on, farmers and home gardeners alike are checking their tomatoes and potatoes for signs of late blight.

So far, though, they’ve mostly been able to breathe a collective sigh of relief, since the fungus that was widespread by the middle of last summer has only reared its head in a handful of isolated cases this year.

“I’m hyper vigilant about noticing anything,” said Karen LeRoy, whose tomatoes at Popoma Farm in Whiting were hard hit by the late blight last summer. “I think I’m finding more (this year) because I’m looking for it.”

Area orchards begin apple harvest early

ADDISON COUNTY — Fall apple picking season is coming a little early this year.

In fact, many area orchards have already begun to offer pick-your-own apples, because their earliest apples are already ripening.

“Our apples are about 10 days early, which is significant,” said Bill Suhr, who owns Champlain Orchards. “It's probably the earliest crop we’ve ever seen.”

He added that his fall raspberries are already ripe, also more than a week ahead of expectations.

ADDISON COUNTY — The 40-some members of the Maiden Vermont women’s chorus have an important performance coming up this Saturday, and the choice of attire is an important consideration.

“It could take us a year to decide what color hat to wear,” chorus director Lindi Bortney said late last week. “Someone said we should wear the red hats, and then someone else said half of us should wear red and half should wear blue.”
