'Independent' lauded for efforts; newspaper wins 22 awards in regional competition

BOSTON — The New England Newspaper and Press Association honored the Addison County Independent with 22 awards at the regional organization’s annual convention in Boston this past weekend. The Addy Indy was recognized as the best among larger weekly publications of more than 6,000 circulation in five categories.

Low-income workers helped by tax credit

VERMONT — The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) can make life a little easier for working Vermonters struggling to make ends meet with a credit up to $5,900. In addition, any family with dependent children who receives the Vermont EITC is automatically income eligible for food benefits through 3SquaresVT — meaning their income and resources don’t count. The IRS estimates one in five eligible taxpayers could miss out on this valuable tax credit because they don’t check it out.

The talk is free and open to the public.

Waltham to lose a school director; Panton will seek a selectman

PANTON — A longtime Waltham school director will reportedly step down, and Panton will have at least one new selectboard member in March, but little change in the ranks of Addison town officials looms on Town Meeting Day.

In Waltham, Kristin Bristow will not seek to be re-nominated from the town meeting floor to the Vergennes Union High School board, according to Addison Northwest Supervisory Union Superintendent Tom O’Brien.

New county investigator will pursue assault and sex crimes

MIDDLEBURY — State and local police are getting a big assist in their investigations of domestic assault and sexual abuse cases thanks to a newly created service based in the Addison County Sheriff’s Department headquarters.

It’s called the Addison County Unit for Special Investigations, or ACUSI, and it includes a part-time investigator to help area law enforcement agencies bring to justice perpetrators of assault and sex crimes against adults and children.

Van Wyck last in Addison-3 race as Castimore withdraws

FERRISBURGH — Mary Ann Castimore of Waltham withdrew her candidacy for the Addison-3 House vacancy on Thursday, leaving Warren Van Wyck of Ferrisburgh as the lone remaining nominee and therefore the presumptive successor to the late Rep. Greg Clark, R-Vergennes.

Six ACSU towns set election slates

Bridport

Residents Edward Payne and Sue Walker will compete for a two-year term on the selectboard. Incumbent Selectwoman Susan Stocker is unopposed in her bid for a three-year term.

Meanwhile, Chuck Welch, Suzanne Buck and Paul Plouffe are running unopposed for terms of one, two and three years, respectively, on the local school board.

Leonard Barrett is running unopposed for another three-year term as Bridport’s representative on the UD-3 board.
