County residents OK most school budgets

ADDISON COUNTY AND BRANDON — Voters on Town Meeting Day gave their approval to four out of the five local high school spending plans.

While residents of the five Addison Northwest Supervisory Union towns rejected the Vergennes Union High School budget (see story, Page 1A), proposed budgets in the rest of Addison County and northern Rutland County met with approval.

Town Meeting Previews 2014

Every year on or around the first Tuesday in March Vermonters gather with their neighbors to weigh in on town, school and highway budgets and to express their views on matters of local interest. The annual town meeting, which has been taking place for more than 250 years in many towns, is also a time for townspeople to re-establish relationships with those whom they see at the store or school drop-off.

MUHS boys' hoop to host; VUHS, Mt. Abe play late

ADDISON COUNTY — The Vergennes and Mount Abraham union high school boys’ basketball teams were set to open Division II postseason play on Wednesday after the deadline for this issue of the Independent, while Middlebury will host a D-I first-round game on Thursday.

Sick leave bill advances in legislature

BRISTOL — A bill that would require many Vermont businesses to allow their employees to accrue paid sick time is advancing in the House, where the measure has unleashed a great deal of debate about the potential impact on businesses.

That bill, H.208, was one of several topics discussed at Monday’s legislative breakfast in Bristol.

Seeley seeks to bring new blood to Middlebury board

MIDDLEBURY — Heather Seeley admits she doesn’t have past experience leading a town — and she’s pleased to put that on her résumé as one of eight candidates campaigning for three spots up for grabs this March on the Middlebury selectboard.

“I don’t have a lot of executive board experience, and I think that can be an advantage,” she said on Thursday. “I’m eager and willing to look at things from a fresh perspective and with an open mind.”

ADDISON COUNTY — The Middlebury FFA chapter is located at and comprised of students enrolled in agriculture courses here at the Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center, which draws students from the 17 towns in the Addison Central, Addison Northwest and Addison Northeast supervisory unions.

Local students are winners in Vermont Brain Bee

BURLINGTON — The fifth annual Vermont Brain Bee (VBB) was held Saturday, Feb. 8, at the University of Vermont’s Medical Education Building in Burlington.

“What a fun and successful day,” said Sharon Leach, PhD and neuropsychologist from the Stern Center for Language and Learning. “We are definitely building beautiful brains in these high school students.”

Health officials warn about fentanyl-laced heroin

ADDISON COUNTY — Fentanyl is being sold and packaged as heroin and state officials say just a few grains of the pure drug “can stop your breathing and kill.”

The Vermont State Police issued a statement Feb. 5 urging Vermonters not to inject fentanyl, or any other drug that has not been prescribed by a doctor.

Independent takes home 21 awards from regional newspaper contest

BOSTON — The New England Newspaper and Press Association honored the Addison County Independent with 21 awards at the regional organization’s annual convention in Boston this past weekend. In the Better Newspaper Contest, the Addy Indy won gold in four categories when judged against larger weekly publications of more than 6,000 circulation from around New England.
