Hundreds compete in Middlebury half-marathon

MIDDLEBURY — About 800 runners participated as individuals or as part of two-member teams in Sunday’s sixth annual Middlebury Maple Run – The Sweetest Half, a popular half-marathon that was held this year in cool and showery conditions.

Montpelier’s Sue Hackney, 57, provided one of the highlights on Sunday, setting a new masters women’s (over 40) course record at 1:31.58 in finishing second overall among women behind West Windsor’s Phoebe Novello, 20, who won in 1:31.17.

Area lawmakers vote on racial profiling bill

MONTPELIER — Vermont lawmakers on Thursday passed a bill mandating that all law enforcement officers collect data about the race of people they pull over. It was, in part, a political statement that they will not tolerate racial profiling by police.

After nearly two hours of impassioned debate, House lawmakers passed S.184 on a vote of 138-3. It was scheduled for a final vote Friday and then must pass the Senate.

Shoreham school to host hearing on pipeline this Wednesday

SHOREHAM — The Vermont Public Service Board (PSB) on Wednesday, May 7, will hold its first of two public hearings on Vermont Gas Systems’ “Phase II” pipeline project that would carry natural gas from Middlebury to the International Paper mill in Ticonderoga, N.Y.

Grants to local businesses aim to protect Vermont's rural character

ADDISON COUNTY — How will Vermont ensure that the landscape is not overrun with suburban-type sprawl? One state-funded board is betting that a new cider press, an egg washer and a portable sawmill will help.

The Working Lands Enterprise Board recently awarded $300,000 in grants to 19 businesses across the state, including three in Addison County. The local recipients of grants were Windfall Orchard in Cornwall, Doolittle Farm in Shoreham and Green Mountain Hardwood in Ripton.

Vermont Gas prepares for Phase III of its pipeline through county

Ten locals ran in Boston Marathon

BOSTON — Ten Addison County residents were among the 36,000 athletes who ran in Monday’s historic Boston Marathon, a year after bombs killed three and injured more than 260 at the Boylston Street finish line.

The number of runners exceeded the 2013 total by about 9,000, and a crowd some estimates pegged at a larger-than-typical 1 million gathered along the route to cheer on the athletes.

Mother's Day card helps to keep local moms safe

MIDDLEBURY — WomenSafe announces that Addison County artist Patricia LeBon Herb’s artwork will grace the 2014 Mother’s Day card — the 13th annual Mother’s Day card in WomenSafe’s Local Women Artist Series.

LeBon Herb started her early professional career as a graphic artist and illustrator. She later became a fine arts painter by profession. She and her husband, Guntram, live in Middlebury. They have two grown children, who have left home for college, which they attend on opposite coasts.

Boyleston Street, tore the tar up. Killed three.

Mangled and dismembered two hundred

 

and sixty-four more than innocent bystanders.

And says again, this Flanagan, she was pissed

off, so quickly the network doesn’t have time

to bleep her words. As if we wouldn’t know

 

what she’s saying, our hometown, Boston-bred
