VERGENNES — Lt. Gov. Phil Scott knows what it means to have one’s life upended by a fire. A year ago a fire struck his business, DuBois Construction, in Middlesex.

In his keynote address at the Addison County Firefighters Association annual meeting at the Eagles Club in Vergennes last Wednesday evening, Scott shared his personal experience of the dedication and bravery of Vermont firefighters. He recounted the heroic efforts he witnessed as firefighters worked through the night and over the course of several days responding to flare-ups.

NEW HAVEN — At 3:30 a.m. on New Year’s Day, New Haven residents Matt and Jackie Schlein received a frantic call from their daughter, informing them that their home was on fire.

The Schleins were out of town visiting relatives in Saugerties, N.Y. When they arrived home in New Haven a few hours after receiving the phone call, their house was, as Schlein wrote on his Facebook page, a “toasted shred” of the structure that he and his family had lived in for 18 years. They lost their cat, their belongings, and the structure of their home.

ADDISON COUNTY — While nearly all Vermonters rely on the Internet to stay on top of business, schooling or their social lives, no group is more dependent on fast, reliable Internet service than telecommuters.

“I spend most of the day connected remotely to a system that I do 99 percent of my work on,” said Addison resident Brad Clark. He’s the IT director for RetailVision, a magazine sales promotion company that last fall closed its office in Middlebury and moved out of state.
