Letter to the editor: Avoid fear, practice soothing, enjoy nature’s bounty

Posted on November 4, 2016 |
By Patricia Heather-Lea

Fear is a 4 letter word.

Between now and the upcoming election and beyond, I am working on avoiding the trap of fear, “What if . . .?”

Isaac Penington, an English Quaker who lived from 1616 to 1679, once wrote, “Our life is love, and peace, and tenderness; and bearing one with another, and forgiving one another, and notlaying accusations one against another; but praying one for another and helping one another up with a tender hand.”

Opinion: Politicians should stay away from nuclear weapons

Posted on August 15, 2016 |
By Patricia Heather-Lea

Seventy-one years ago, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima on Aug. 6 and another on Nagasaki on Aug. 9.

According to the Federation of American Scientists, the United States has reduced its “operational nuclear warheads from 4,950 in 2010 to 4,700 nuclear warhead in 2015”. (The Guardian, April, 2016) President Obama’s “vision and work for a world without nuclear weapons” (Norwegian Nobel committee, 2009) has not been fulfilled. What legacy are we leaving our children and grandchildren?

Opinion: Violence is never the right answer

Posted on July 28, 2016 |
By Patricia Heather-Lea

It has been a time of reflection for me. My heart goes out to families and friends who are grieving the loss of loved ones. I find myself drawn to gardens, to watch nature carry on.

Opinion: Use of Roundup threatens health

Posted on April 18, 2016 |
By Patricia Heather-Lea

Last week I received in the mail someTrue ValueReward coupons that I could redeem at my local hardware store. I cut out the RoundUp coupon and mailed it back to the hardware store. I requested that the hardware store take RoundUp off its shelves, along with any other herbicide containing glyphosate. In March 2015, the United Nations’ World Health Organization stated that glyphosate is “probably carcinogenic to humans.” I told the hardware store to stop taking chances with our health.

Opinion: Community, not violence, the answer to problems

This past summer, my husband noticed a bumper sticker that said, “I am not a liberal. I support the 2nd Amendment.”

Opinion: No one truly wins in matters of war

Posted on December 23, 2015 |
By Patricia Heather-Lea

I have a sign in my front yard that says, “War is not the answer!” It was made by the Friends Committee on National Legislation.

A few years ago, one of my neighbors asked me, “What is the question?” I think I answered his question with this question. “How do different countries respond to each other when they don’t get what they want?”

Opinion: Wild Roots Farm reaches veterans

Posted on November 12, 2015 |
By Patricia Heather-Lea

On this Veterans Day, I honor the healing process of offering veterans a place to plant, to build, to work, to rest, to sweat, to sing, to eat … to reflect and to emerge into feeling held by community. Jon Turner has offered his Wild Roots Farm in Bristol for this work to happen.

On Memorial Day weekend, Jon and fellow veterans built a sweat lodge. They then used the sweat lodge. Chanting and singing helped the cleansing. Friends, family and community welcomed their emergence with food and company. The ages ranged from 6 months to 83 years.

Opinion: Incident with dogs offers lesson on path of learning

Posted on August 24, 2015 |
By Patricia Heather-Lea

Last week my family and I vacationed in Maine. We stayed near Popham Beach. I had the chance to walk down to the mouth of the Kennebec River and say my daily prayers.

The union of the river and the ocean was a fitting place to greet the world, offering me a place to chant, “May the healing light of love fill the planet and all beings on it.”

Along came an apologetic woman with her two plodding, drooling dogs. She did not want to interrupt the “zen” of the moment.

Opinion: Early education prevents drama in the classroom

Posted on May 18, 2015 |
By Patricia Heather-Lea

Dear Mount Abraham Union High School board members,

I read this headline in the May 7 edition of the Addison County Independent: “Juvenile cases flood court system. County officials say opiate addiction, troubled families cause caseload to spike.”

How much does it cost to “fix” these problems?

Opinion: Ideas offered for world security

Posted on September 11, 2014 |
By Patricia Heather-Lea

Here are some ideas for the World “Security” Act. They are the same words that emerge in my daily prayers. May these aspects be present in our lives: food, clean water, home, health, hope, family, self, community, compassion, worthwhile work, education, joy, beauty, music, spiritual journey, love, kindness, forgiveness, respect, dignity, gratitude, patience, courage… Add on what you think we all need.
