Lindholm: Beautiful day — Let's play two!

When Ernie Banks was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1977, he began his acceptance speech with his customary invocation: “We’ve got the setting. Sunshine. Fresh air. We’ve got the team behind us. So let’s play two!”

Ernie Banks died on Jan. 23, and the flag of every Cubs fan flew at half-mast on that day. He was officially “Mr. Cub,” having played only for the Cubs for all his 19 years in the majors. It is safe to say there has not been a more beloved athlete by fans in any sport than Ernie Banks was to Chicagoans.

Karl Lindholm: Vermont's Schoolmaster is in the Hall of Fame

I was skeptical.

When I first heard that Middlebury College was considering an Athletic Hall of Fame, I had reservations.

A hall of fame can be a can of worms, producing as much discord as concord, as much dismay at who’s not included as celebration of who gets in.

Halls of fame are by their very nature exclusive. We preach in schools the joy of competition and the benefits of participation, but we know the most highly accomplished are not always the most highly dedicated.

Clippings: Making sense of time as clock ticks

Posted on January 21, 2015 |
By Karl Lindholm

I tend to stay up too late at night.

I watch sports on TV — the Red Sox every night in the summer, and then maybe when the game’s over an old “Law and Order” episode, with the computer on my lap. I check Facebook and send an e-mail or two to old pals, maybe even start an old movie and fall asleep on the coach for a few hours, before I go to bed, “climb the old wooden hill,” as my dad used to say. Fatigued as I am, I nonetheless am careful to take the pills that I’m told are keeping me alive, who knows.

Karl Lindholm: Whither baseball: Just too slow?

By Karl Lindholm

I know, it’s football season and here we are basking in the glow of the Middlebury Tigers championship, and excellent seasons from the Middlebury College team and the Otters down the road at Otter Valley Union High.

Next week, we will cook a bird and overeat and collapse, many of us, in front of the TV to watch football. But as the temperature drops and winter beckons, I have baseball, the summer game, on my mind.

This week, I'm not-watching football because... I'm done. The cognitive dissonance it requires to pretend that it's fun to watch awful people having awful things done to their bodies to enrich other awful people is just too much to bear.

That’s a comment made recently by a Facebook friend.

Karl Lindholm: Thoughts on golf and presidents

Posted on September 24, 2014 |
By Karl Lindholm

Word is that our basketball-playing President Obama has fallen in love with golf.

He tries to get out on the golf course once a week. He says that playing golf makes him feel “almost normal; ... it’s the only time I’m outside.”

His critics find this diversion unseemly, charging that he is fiddling while Rome burns. The Tea Party site Obamagolfcounter.com tracks how many rounds he has played while in office. At last view, it registered 192.

Karl Lindholm: A tribute to a Yankee star at the end of the line

By Karl Lindholm

Here’s to my favorite Yankee — 40 years old and nearly at the end of the line.

What a fabulous career, over 20 years playing at the highest level of pro baseball, always performing with great skill and consistency, both as a hitter (over 3,000 hits, a lifetime batting average over .300) and in the field (winning Gold Gloves for defensive excellence). He is likely a first ballot Hall of Famer a few years hence.

Karl Lindholm column go cameroon.JPG

Editor’s note: Since last August, our columnist has been filing his stories from Cameroon, West Africa.

At the end of the movie “The Color of Money,” a rejuvenated, if middle-age, “Fast Eddie” Felson (Paul Newman), pronounces triumphantly, “I’m back!”

That’s me, sort of. After 10 months in Africa, I’m here to announce tentatively: “I’m back?”

Editor’s note: Our columnist has been spending this year in Cameroon, West Africa.

I had a good day on Good Friday, last month: I played golf.

I hope to play one more time before I come home to Vermont in late June.

There are four golf courses in all of Cameroon, this in a country of 22.5 million people, covering 183,000 square miles, in an area slightly larger than California.

For the past three weekends, Richard, Valentine, and I have been undertaking a bit of light hoop anthropology, visiting the outdoor basketball courts scattered about the city here in Yaounde.
