NopFarmFire1365.jpg

SALISBURY — Work was returning to normal at the Nop Brothers and Sons Farm in Salisbury this week after a big fire claimed the equipment barn off Route 7 this past Friday night. The new normal, that is, in which the family and their farm workers must take hours of extra time feeding the more than 600 cows they milk each day.

No people or animals were injured in the blaze, which drew firefighters from eight area departments, but the farm lost four critical feed trucks, two skid steers and a tractor that were all used in feeding the cows.

Granville fire_0351.jpg

GRANVILLE — Firefighters from five towns knocked down a hot fire at an old tool shed in Granville last Sunday afternoon, thus saving the big old barn that sits only a few feet away.

The 30-by-40-foot shed was fully involved in flames when members of the Granville Volunteer Fire Department arrived on the scene at 3 p.m., and the firefighters immediately started pouring water on the blaze and on the historic barn that sat only 12 feet away.

MIDDLEBURY — Bristol 38-year-old Todd Smith, coming off a three-hour-39-minute finish in the Boston Marathon less than three weeks earlier, was almost within sweating distance of Middlebury College senior Melake Getabecha near the end of Sunday morning’s fifth annual Middlebury Maple Run — The Sweetest Half. Clippings by John S. McCright: Just one of 183,000; but a special one

The other day I heard some self-obsessed celebrity on the radio say that if you googled his first name a reference to him turned up on the first page of the Internet search engine’s results. I thought it would be fun to see how high I would come up when I googled my first name. Alas, my first name is not unusual; in fact it is one of the least unusual names in the English language.

MIDDLEBURY — When the track and field season begins at the Middlebury Union Middle School this spring a handful of athletes started out in a little better shape than they might have, thanks to an informal winter running program.

At the end of last fall’s cross-country season a group of the athletes felt that they had built up a good base of fitness and didn’t want it to atrophy over the winter. So they asked their coaches, Wendy Hollander and Karen Morris, if they would continue practices over the course of the winter.

ADDISON COUNTY — Weybridge photographer John Huddleston has released a book of compelling images that capture the quiet grandeur of the Champlain Valley’s landscape. “Healing Ground: Walking the Farms of Vermont” features more than 60 photos that illuminate what is unique in ordinary things, and what is beautiful in the places that we drive past without noticing.

“They are everyday things, not idealized images of Vermont, not sunsets,” Huddleston said.
