Addison County folks take stand at March in Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — “I just kept crying,” East Middlebury resident Joanna Colwell said recounting her experience at the Women’s March on Washington this past Saturday. “I’ve never been in a crowd that big, and I’ve been in some big crowds.”

Big was a word used by many of the Addison County residents who went to the huge rally on the National Mall the day after President Trump’s inauguration.

Supreme Court OK with 'ugly' solar arrays

NEW HAVEN — Just because you think something your neighbor is putting up on his land is ugly doesn’t mean you can get a Vermont court to make him take it down.

That was the consensus of the Vermont Supreme Court in a ruling last Friday in a case that involved two proposed solar arrays in New Haven.

Elderly man killed in Middlebury fire Wednesday

MIDDLEBURY — A 96-year-old man lost his life in a fire at his home on Murdock Court in Middlebury on Wednesday evening.

The Middlebury Fire Department received a call reporting a fire at 7 Murdock Court — off Weybridge Street — at a little past 7:30 p.m. The call came from a family member who came home and found the house filled with smoke. He informed authorities that the man may be inside.

5-megawatt solar array proposed for Weybridge could equal largest in Vermont

WEYBRIDGE — A Minneapolis developer is readying a proposal to build one of the state’s largest solar arrays in Weybridge.

Ecos Energy LLC sent a letter to Weybridge residents on Nov. 29 saying it is exploring development of two ground-mounted solar power arrays on an open field between Quaker Village Road and Field Days Road. Most of the 73-acre property is in Weybridge (58 acres), and 15 acres is in New Haven.

Driver who killed bicyclist sentenced to 7-16 years

MIDDLEBURY — Twenty months ago mourners at the funeral of beloved local resident Kelly Boe filled the pews and spilled out of the doors at St. Mary’s Church.

On Monday locals packed the house for Boe again. This time it was at the Addison County Courthouse, where the man who was driving drunk when he struck and killed Boe was sentenced to a substantial jail term.

Judge Samuel Hoar sent 29-year-old Nathan C. Dearing to prison for seven-and-a-half to 16 years.

In county House and Senate races incumbents triumph

ADDISON COUNTY — Incumbents won in most of the Statehouse races in Addison County on Tuesday.

The local delegation will only see two new faces when it returns to Montpelier in January. Robin Scheu won one of the two Addison-1 House seats; she is taking the place of long-time state Rep. Betty Nuovo, who chose not to run for re-election. The other newby is Peter Conlon, who won the Addison-2 House seat that Rep. Willem Jewett did not seek re-election to.

Residents in five towns to cast ballots on ANeSU unification plan

BRISTOL — Voters in the five towns of the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union on Tuesday will decide whether to unify governance and budgets of the district’s eight schools. They will also elect members of the unified school board, in case the unification article passes.

Police identify remains of human found by hiker in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has identified the human remains found in Middlebury last Friday as those of a 28-year-old woman, a Korean national, from Fairfax, Va.

Middlebury Police Chief Tom Hanley on Wednesday morning said that the cause, manner and date of the woman’s death were as yet undetermined. There is no indication that the woman was subjected to or involved in any unlawful activity leading up to her death, Hanley said in a press release.

None of the police leads indicate there is any danger to the public.
