Vermont Senate eyes funding path to clean water

SHOREHAM — The Vermont Senate this week was set to take action on a bill that would lead to a funding scheme for the state’s share of an estimated $2.3 billion cleanup of the state’s waterways — including Lake Champlain.

Bill S.260 would create an eight-person study committee that would be asked, among other things, to consider a per-parcel fee to collect the more than $26 million in annual revenues over the next 20-plus years that is Vermont’s share of the federally mandated cleanup.

Mari Cordes confirms second bid for Addison-4 House seat

LINCOLN — Mari Cordes is hoping in November to reverse the order of results in her last race for Addison-4’s two seats in the Vermont House. In that 2016 election, the Lincoln Democrat finished a close fourth among the four candidates competing for the right to represent Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton and Starksboro.

It was Cordes’ first House run, and she’s using it as a learning experience to make her a more successful candidate this time around.

Town Hall Theater, Shoreham library awarded repair funds

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater and Shoreham’s Platt Memorial Library have landed state grants that will improve the durability and historic integrity of those two venerable buildings.

The Vermont Division for Historic Preservation recently awarded matching grants of $9,400 to replace around 500 deteriorating bricks in the exterior façade of the THT building, and $9,544 to restore the original front entrance of the Platt Memorial Library.

New director takes charge of Middlebury teen center

MIDDLEBURY — Zoe Kaslow made some wonderful contacts at Middlebury College during her four years there as a student and as a leader of the institution’s activities board.

Kaslow, 26, now wants to put those contacts to good use to boost programming for local youth at Addison Central Teens (ACT), an organization she has been leading since Feb. 1.

MIDDLEBURY — Dr. Daniel Freilich believes he can become part of the cure for a Congress he said is paralyzed by partisan gridlock and beholden to big money interests.

Freilich, a Brownsville Democrat, U.S. Navy captain and medical doctor, is challenging incumbent U.S. Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt., this fall.

Sharpe reflects on his lengthy career in the Vermont house

BRISTOL — Saturday, March 3, saw scores of Starksboro residents assemble at their local elementary school for their annual town meeting.

Among the guests were Rep. Dave Sharpe, Rep. Fred Baser and Sen. Chris Bray. One after the other, they went up to the microphone to deliver their reports on goings-on in Montpelier.

Sharpe, the last of the lawmakers to speak, delivered some news that caught everyone by surprise:

“I won’t be seeking re-election.”

Even Sharpe’s legislative colleagues were caught unaware.

All school budgets in Addison County get voter OK

ADDISON COUNTY — Reflecting a statewide trend that saw the vast majority of school budgets pass in Town Meeting votes, all four of the proposed Pre-K-12 budgets that will serve Addison County students during the 2018-2019 school year passed comfortably through Australian ballot voting on Tuesday.

Khan, Fuentes-George picked for Middlebury selectboard; Eckles wins Ilsley seat by one vote

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury voters at their town meeting Monday night approved all money items on their warning and in Australian balloting the next day decided some hotly contested races for their selectboard and the Ilsley Library Board of Trustees.

Incumbent Farhad Khan and political newcomer Lindsey Fuentes-George prevailed in a three-person race for two spots on the Middlebury selectboard. Khan drew the most votes, with 949. Fuentes-George finished second, with 784 votes. Former Selectman Gary Baker finished out of the running with 399 tallies.

Middlebury gets grant to market downtown during rail bridge construction

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) is giving the town of Middlebury $75,000 to help promote its downtown businesses and amenities this year during the first phase of work on the Main Street and Merchants Row rail bridges.

The $75,000 is likely to be the first of three, like-sized annual grants VTrans will pass along to Middlebury to aggressively market and support its downtown through 2020, when work will be in full swing on a $71 million tunnel project that will replace two temporary spans.
