New Porter ExpressCare clinic a big success in its first year

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center’s ExpressCare clinic, which will soon mark its first anniversary, has wildly exceeded its boosters’ expectations and may soon increase its operating hours in order to meet growing demand for the service.

“It’s received enormous support from our community,” Porter President Dr. Fred Kniffin said of ExpressCare, which treats folks with non-life threatening injuries or illnesses who might otherwise seek out more costly and acute Emergency Department care.

Middlebury Antique Center and Ben Franklin to close soon

MIDDLEBURY — The sun will set on two longtime Middlebury businesses this summer: The Ben Franklin Store at 63 Main St. and the Middlebury Antique Center at 3255 Route 7 South.

Owners of both stores have been trying to sell their respective properties for more than a year. And in both cases, the owners are making clear their closing plans to customers through colorful signs and related liquidation sales.

New Haven River Anglers keep fishing for fun, 37 years later

BRISTOL — It began in 1981 as a group of avid anglers looking to share their love of the sport.

It’s evolved into a diverse collection of men, women and youths who not only share the common interest in fishing, but also in preserving one of the key natural resources in which they practice their sport.

It’s the New Haven River Anglers Association (NHRAA), which recently celebrated its 37th birthday.

Sen. Claire Ayer won't run again after 16 years representing Addison County

MIDDLEBURY — Veteran state Sen. Claire Ayer, D-Addison, won’t seek a ninth consecutive two-year term this November, a move that will reverberate through the state’s highest chamber and undoubtedly add intrigue to Addison County’s legislative election picture.

Ayer — chairwoman of the Senate Health & Welfare Committee and one of the most senior and influential Democrat lawmakers in Montpelier — said she wants to make way for an infusion of new blood in the Vermont Statehouse.

Michael Sommers returns from the 'hood with heart

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury native Michael Sommers was so taken with his adopted neighborhood in West Oakland, California, that he wrote and performed a one-act play six years ago about his interactions with other folks on his street — a collection of eccentrics, street toughs and down-to-earth folks. He called his play “Hick in the ’Hood,” which summed up his experience of being an admitted country bumpkin suddenly thrust into an urban setting and surrounded by people of different colors, creeds and backgrounds.

Blue Spruce Motel owner plans to rebuild

MIDDLEBURY — The owner of Blue Spruce Motel property at 2428 Route 7 South in Middlebury said workers will soon begin clearing the site of fire-scorched debris, setting the stage for a potential construction of a new lodging establishment.

Sam Sharma during a Monday phone interview said he’s inquired with the Middlebury planning office about the logistics of erecting a new motel in place of the Blue Spruce, which was destroyed by a fire back on July 12, 2017.

Middlebury gets ready for major road projects

MIDDLEBURY — Downtown won’t be the only part of Middlebury dealing with some construction-related challenges this spring and summer.

Workers will be out in full force during the coming months improving portions of Charles Avenue, Shard Villa Road, South Street, and South Chipman Park, according to Middlebury Director of Operations Dan Werner.

Middlebury begins search for passenger rail platform

MIDDLEBURY — The town of Middlebury has hired the engineering firm VHB to help it site a new passenger rail platform in anticipation of Amtrak service coming to the Shire Town within the next three years.

VHB was selected from among three firms that declared interest in the job, which calls for scouring the downtown area for locations that could host a platform for future customers of Amtrak service between Burlington and New York City.

Former Bristol chief to run for county sheriff

BRISTOL — A lot of people get so excited about the prospect of retirement that they tick off days on a calendar.

But Kevin Gibbs is counting the days until Nov. 6, when he hopes area voters will pull him out of retirement and select him as the new Addison County Sheriff.

Gibbs, 58, called it quits last September after a 31-year tenure with the Bristol Police Department, the final 25 of those spent as chief.
