Lawmakers to revisit Act 46 per-pupil spending limits

MONTPELIER — Area school districts struggling to draft budgets that comply with the new per-pupil spending guidelines prescribed by Act 46 might get an 11th-hour reprieve. The Legislature next month will consider amendments to Act 46 that might relax — or postpone — the spending restrictions that are part of the new school governance consolidation law.

Middlebury Fire Department puts out call for more firefighters

Cornwall kids learn about life on the farm

CORNWALL — Children attending Cornwall’s Bingham Memorial School are surrounded by some of the county’s most successful and renowned farms. But in this age of digital distractions and other competing interests, most of the kids hadn’t given much thought to what the farms are producing — even though they and their families are likely regular consumers of the milk, cheese, apples and syrup made a veritable stone’s throw away.

Middlebury RR bridge getting a major rehab

MIDDLEBURY — While controversy reigns over the proposed replacement of Middlebury’s two downtown rail bridges, work is quietly proceeding on another rail span project just a short distance away.

At issue is the 200-foot-long rail trestle bridge located off Water Street, just south of the Cross Street Bridge. Built in the late 1800s, the steel structure is deteriorating and is now undergoing a $1.4-million repair project coordinated by the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans).

Remains found in Goshen are those of woman missing since January

GOSHEN — Vermont State Police have confirmed that human skeletal remains found at the side of the Gap Road in Goshen on Dec. 22 are those of Denise Hart, a 24-year-old woman who had been missing from the Sudbury area since Jan. 25. Authorities have ruled her death a homicide, based on examination of the remains and the crime scene.

Lincoln, Ferrisburgh and Starksboro get vote tabulators

LINCOLN — A new state law is requiring three Addison County communities to swap manual ballot counting for automatic tabulators, beginning with the next general elections.

At issue are some tweaks that lawmakers made last session to the state’s election laws that now require communities with more than 1,000 registered voters to use automatic tabulators for counting ballots in general elections. The change officially takes effect on July 1 of next year, according to William Senning, director of elections for the Vermont Secretary of State’s Office.

Greifzu picked as interim leader for home health and hospice agency

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County Home Health & Hospice (ACHHH) announced on Thursday that its clinical director, Sherry Greifzu, will now serve also as the agency’s interim executive director, taking over for longtime leader Larry Goetschius.

Goetschius announced on Dec. 4 that he was leaving to “explore other options in my life,” according to ACHHH board President Chuck Burdick.
