Middlebury property tax rate increases by 2 cents

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on July 11 approved an overall, fiscal year 2018 residential property tax rate of $2.806 per $100 in property value. That represents a roughly 2-cent increase compared to last year’s rate of $2.786.

Fire destroys Blue Spruce Motel on Route 7 in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Seven area fire departments responded to a Wednesday morning blaze that destroyed the Blue Spruce Motel at 2428 Route 7 South.

Middlebury Fire Chief Dave Shaw said he knew of no fatalities or injuries among those staying at what owner Sam Sharma said was at the time a fully rented motel.

Sharma said he plans to rebuild.

Fire investigators were still investigating the possible origin(s) of the blaze as the Addison Independent went to press.

Maritime Museum seeks to raise historic Revolutionary War gunboat than sunk in 1776

VERGENNES — Twenty years after researchers found the Revolutionary War gunboat Spitfire in its watery grave, Lake Champlain Maritime Museum officials are recommending that it be raised, conserved and perpetually exhibited as a cultural treasure offering a direct link to the birth of the United States.

Civil War soldier given his due: Solitary Salisbury grave finally put on map by two local veterans

SALISBURY — For 138 years now, the solitary, lustrous marble marker off Salisbury’s Lower Plains Road has been a source of curiosity for generations of passersby.

Who chose eternal sleep at this unlikely spot?

Those intrigued enough to stop for a closer look have been rewarded with a glimpse of the final resting place of Phineas “Riley” Rice, whose patriotism prompted him to drop his shovel on a Vermont farm and pick up a rifle that he would carry onto the blood-soaked fields of Gettysburg, Pa., in July of 1863.

Robin Scheu set to retire from county business boosting post

MIDDLEBURY — Robin Scheu has spent the past nine years promoting business growth in the area as executive director of the Addison County Economic Development Corp. (ACEDC).

Now she’s preparing to have some fun.

Scheu, 60, confirmed last week that she will be retiring from the ACEDC in December.

It’s a job she began back in November of 2008 — which was an interesting point in history to be in the business of promoting economic development, Scheu recalled.

Middlebury eyes benefits from food co-op expansion

Former Greg's market sold; new owner keen to re-establish grocery business

MIDDLEBURY — Longtime Middlebury businessman Tony Neri has purchased the former Greg’s Meat Market property at 3 Elm St. and hopes to return it to its former life as a neighborhood grocery store.

“It could happen in 60 days, it could take six months, but it’s going to happen,” Neri said on Monday of his effort to rekindle a supermarket operation that has been dormant since April 2015, when former Greg’s owner Bart Litvin filed for bankruptcy protection and closed the much-loved store after having owned it for six years.

Lincoln woman joins D.C. health care protest and gets arrested

LINCOLN — Lincoln resident Mari Cordes on Thursday returned from a whirlwind, three-day trip to Washington, D.C., that included wading through bustling airports, bunking down at a hostel and getting arrested.

While that might seem like a nightmare scenario for most people, Cordes pronounced the trip a rousing success.
