NEW HAVEN/STARKSBORO — Rep. Chris Bray, D-New Haven, and Starksboro Republican Mark Snelling finished on the losing end of their respective party’s primary races for lieutenant governor, but voters have likely not heard the last from the two candidates.

“For my first statewide race coming from a small town in Addison County, I’m pleased at how close I was,” Bray, a two-term House incumbent said in reaction to his loss, by 52 percent to 48 percent of the vote, to Rep. Steve Howard, D-Rutland City.

BRIDPORT — Sen. Harold Giard, D-Bridport, woke up Wednesday morning with a new lease on his political life after surviving a spirited challenge from East Middlebury resident Amy Sheldon in a close Democrat write-in campaign for state Senate.

Giard, a three-term incumbent, defeated Sheldon 845-757, based on write-in returns from the 23 Addison County towns and Brandon that make up the two-seat senatorial district.

VERGENNES — While a five-person contest for the Democrat nomination for governor is garnering much of the election headlines leading up to Vermont’s Aug. 24 primary, U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., is not taking lightly his quest for another six-year term.

Leahy, the country’s second longest-serving U.S. senator (almost 36 years), faces a primary of his own this Tuesday against Daniel Freilich of Wilmington. The winner of that race will face Pomfret Republican Len Britton in the Nov. 2 election.

Local House, Senate races highlight ballot

MIDDLEBURY — A Republican runoff in the Addison-4 House district; a write-in campaign for the state Senate; two local men vying for lieutenant governor; and a five-way race for the Democratic nomination for governor should give Addison County residents extra incentive to show up at the polls for Tuesday’s primary election.

Voter participation is notoriously low for mid-term elections, and Vermont officials are particularly concerned about light turnout this year because of a particularly early primary date.

EAST MIDDLEBURY — State Senate candidate Amy Sheldon believes additional health care reforms will not only create more fit Vermonters but will also provide a potent panacea for the economic ills the state is facing.

“Health care is a huge driver in the cost of public education and government services,” said Sheldon, an East Middlebury Democrat. “If we can find a way to make (health care) more affordable for all Vermonters, we will solve a number of problems.”

Middlebury's local option tax collection going strong

Posted on August 19, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Middle-bury’s local option tax revenues continue to slightly out-pace the amount needed to meet debt service on the new Cross Street Bridge project, providing a harbinger, municipal officials said, of both a recovering economy and a future community debate on what should be done with any excess funds.

Middlebury Assistant Town Manager Joe Colangelo confirmed the town netted $170,869 in local option tax revenue during the second quarter of 2010, an amount that is $5,452 greater than the second quarter of 2009.

BRIDPORT — Addison County State’s Attorney David Fenster’s decision on whether to prosecute the suspect in an Aug. 13 accidental shooting in Bridport is not likely to happen for several days as Vermont State Police continue their investigation into the case.

Peter Damone, 76, was listed in “guarded” condition in an induced coma at the Fletcher Allen Health Care intensive care unit on Tuesday after being hit in the face by a .45-caliber bullet while in his backyard at a little after 8 p.m. last Friday, his wife Dorothy Damone reported.

MIDDLEBURY — U.S. Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt., wants to harness the power of Vermont’s growing renewable energy industry to fuel more “green” initiatives at the national level.

Welch was in Addison County last week as part of an “energy tour,” surveying local businesses’ renewable energy initiatives and products. His stops included Nathaniel Electronics in Vergennes, which is working on new solar technology, and the Blue Spruce Farm in Bridport, home to one of the state’s largest and most successful manure-to-energy power systems.
