UD-3 board declines to revisit budget

Posted on January 14, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — A majority of the UD-3 board on Tuesday rejected a motion to reopen the proposed 2010-2011 budget for additional cuts, stating it was too late in the process to make sweeping changes and that district voters will have a chance to send them a message about the spending plan on Town Meeting Day.

The board had called the meeting late last week after it received information from the state that indicated property taxes in some Addison Central Supervisory Union towns could be rising dramatically despite a proposed 2.81 percent increase in spending.

Clippings: Daughter more than treading water

Posted on January 14, 2010 |
By John Flowers

I (vaguely) recall my first swimming lesson amounting to something like this: My instructor, probably an overzealous young punk who must’ve studied under Genghis Khan, picked me up and chucked me into the community swimming pool. It was the lunkhead’s way of cutting to the chase, I suppose, reasoning in a Neanderthal kind of way that if the little kid instinctively moved his arms and legs in a desperate act of self-preservation, he was teachable and could earn his water wings.

Middlebury Selectman Keeler to step down

Posted on January 11, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Selectman Don Keeler will not run for re-election this March, citing a desire to at least temporarily take a break from town government activities and give someone else a chance to serve the community.

“I thought long and hard about it,” Keeler said during an interview last week. “I just think that with the six years I’ve served, along with the six years I served during the late 1970s and early 1980s, I’ve done my part. It’s time for some new blood.”

MONTPELIER — Gov. James Douglas threw down the gauntlet in his final state-of-the-state address on Thursday, urging lawmakers to enact a series of initiatives he believes will advance economic development and reduce school spending.

Douglas, a Middlebury Republican, pulled no punches in an address that took just over 40 minutes to deliver and was interrupted 10 times by applause from a General Assembly heavily dominated by Democrats.

New bridge, ferry tab could add up to $110 million

VERGENNES — Designing the replacement for the Champlain Bridge will involve a literal, as well as figurative balancing act, according to officials from HNTB, the firm commissioned by the state of New York to plan the new structure.

The new bridge will have to be wide enough to better accommodate vehicles, pedestrians and bikers, but not so wide that it triggers more intensive permitting requirements, HNTB Vice President Ted Zoli told more than 60 area residents who showed up in Vergennes on Monday evening for an overview of how the span will take shape.

Ti Ferry ends its winter run

SHOREHAM — The workday commute between New York state and Addison County got considerably more challenging on Sunday when the Ticonderoga Ferry closed for the winter.

The ferry — which links Shoreham with Ticonderoga, N.Y. — had to close after its 8 p.m. run on Jan. 3 because its owners were unable to extend insurance coverage deeper into the winter.

Town budget set for public hearing

Posted on January 7, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury residents on Jan. 26 will be able to weigh in on a proposed fiscal year 2011 municipal budget that is $50,468 less than the current spending plan and that would maintain the same municipal tax rate as this year.

The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday officially OK’d, for public hearing, a proposed municipal spending plan of $8,127,649 — of which $1,250,000 is associated with debt service on the new Cross Street Bridge. That expense is being covered by a bond issue, with the debt retired through local option taxes and a substantial gift from Middlebury College.

MIDDLEBURY — It was way too frigid to pause for a view of the Otter Creek Falls in Middlebury last week, but a work crew braved the elements to rough out the contours of a new park area in the Marble Works that will really start to take shape next spring.
