Physician escapes Phillipine typhoon

MIDDLEBURY — Dr. Kristofer Anderson became accustomed to the raucous rainstorms that would pop up almost every afternoon while volunteering his medical services earlier this month in the small village of Santa Fe, on the island of Leyte in the Philippines.

Little did the Middlebury-based physician know that those rainstorms would be a prelude to the cataclysmic deluge wrought by Yolanda, a category 5 typhoon that killed thousands of Filipinos and leveled entire villages during its scourge.

Committee girds for information blitz on Middlebury town office proposal

Draft budget calls for two layoffs at MUMS

MIDDLEBURY — The UD-3 school board will spend the next six weeks fine tuning the first draft of a 2014-2015 budget of $17,157,619, a spending plan that reflects a 3.45-percent increase while resulting in a reduction of  two full-time teaching positions at Middlebury Union Middle School.

“I think it’s been a positive process,” ACSU Superintendent Peter Burrows said of the budget preparation, which will continue at the UD-3 board’s Nov. 19 meeting.

February opening targeted for tavern

MIDDLEBURY — Restaurateur and chef Michel Mahe said he’s shooting for a February 2014 opening for his latest gastronomic enterprise that will be located in the former Jackson’s on the River space at 7 Bakery Lane in Middlebury.

Mahe explained that permitting and some changes in renovation plans have delayed what he had originally hoped would be a spring-summer 2013 opening for the as-yet-unnamed restaurant. Interior renovations have been ongoing for the past four months.

Local man sails to physical freedom

MIDDLEBURY — There are times when Colin Smith feels like a prisoner in his own body. Myotonic muscular dystrophy has made him feel constantly fatigued and has weakened his muscles to the point where he must limp along with a cane. But in his own mind, the 39-year-old can still see himself juggling a soccer ball, wielding a lacrosse stick and schussing down a ski slope.

Local state police barracks gets a new chief

NEW HAVEN — Vermont State Police Lt. Michael Manley has been appointed the new commander of the VSP’s Addison County barracks in New Haven. Manley, 35, succeeds Lt. Gary Genova, who retired last month after having served two-and-a-half years as leader of the state police’s force in the county.

Manley, a native of the Utica, N.Y., area, joined the VSP in 2000, soon after graduating from Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pa.

Labor board to review Porter Medical Center nurses' union vote

MIDDLEBURY — The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) will be asked to hold a hearing to reconcile 16 challenged ballots that could determine whether Porter Medical Center’s nurses form a union.

An impressive 146 of PMC’s 150 nurses turned out on Thursday, Nov. 7, to cast ballots on whether to form a union under the Vermont Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals.
