Between the Lines: A day of hiking with 'Superman'

Posted on June 8, 2017 |
By Gregory Dennis

I met Superman in New Haven last fall.

At the time I didn’t realize that Alberto Schiavon was Superman. I thought he was just a fit and articulate Italian, in town to talk about his family’s small hotel in the Dolomites.

Gregg and Caroline Marston, the New Haven residents who for many years owned VBT Bicycling and Walking Vacations, introduced me to Alberto at a wine-and-cheese event for friends of VBT.

Letter to the Editor: 'Thoughtful' letter part of good dialogue

Posted on March 27, 2017 |
By Gregory Dennis

I appreciated the letter to the editor from LuAnn Chiola, in which she offered a thoughtful case for the student protesters who prevented author Charles Murray from speaking at a Middlebury College podium. Obviously reasonable people differ on this issue.

However, Ms. Chiola does not accurately reflect what I wrote when she criticizes my defense of Murray’s right to articulate his sometimes abhorrent views. I did not write of the protesters that “their cause is not rooted in morals or ethics.”

Gregory Dennis: Hoop and snow dreams mingle

Posted on March 23, 2017 |
By Gregory Dennis

It’s been another lousy year to be an Eastern skier. And another great year to be a fan of Middlebury College men’s basketball.

There’s little mystery about what’s happening to Vermont skiing. It used to be we’d have a lot of 30-degree days with snow. Now we have a lot of 35-degree days with rain.

Blame it on climate change. And expect it to get worse over time.

Back in the last century, we could always count on a January thaw of a couple days.

Gregory Dennis: Trump in store for a rough ride

Posted on February 9, 2017 |
By Gregory Dennis

There’s said to be an old Chinese curse, “May you live in interesting times.” We are certainly living in interesting times with Donald Trump.

I almost wrote “under Donald Trump.”

But the evidence has mounted in the chaotic three weeks of this administration of incompetent revolutionaries. And one thing is increasingly clear: While we will be living with Trump for several years to come, we don’t have to see ourselves as living under him or his rule.

Greg Dennis: Trump and the climate change narative

Posted on December 1, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

Liberals everywhere are gnashing their teeth over what will happen under President Donald Trump and the GOP Congress.

Will Trump abolish Obamacare and deprive 22 million Americans of the healthcare coverage they just got? Will he cancel the Iran deal and move the world closer to nuclear war? Will he really try to deport 11 million immigrants, slash the Medicaid safety net, and penalize women who get an abortion?

Gregory Dennis: Minter, Scott and old vs. new Vermont

Posted on November 4, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

Take a close look at the governor’s race this year. You’re looking at two different Vermonts.

Old Vermont is Republican Phil Scott, the current lieutenant governor. He’s a state native, longtime legislator, owner of a construction company and the winningest ever race car driver at Thunder Road International SpeedBowl.

New Vermont is Democrat Sue Minter, from “away” but  a longtime state resident who got her first Vermont job with the Conservation Law Foundation, was a legislator and later ran VTrans.

Gregory Dennis: What men do – and don't-– say in locker rooms

Posted on October 20, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

So what exactly do men talk about in locker rooms?

Donald Trump was caught on tape admitting to the now-unemployed Billy Bush that he forcibly kissed women without warning and grabbed them by the genitals.

“When you’re a star, they let you do it,” he bragged.

But as we now know from at least 15 women who say they were inappropriately groped by Trump, they don’t in fact let you do it. They protect their dignity and get the hell out of there.

Gregory Dennis: Dems still shortchanging the Progs

Posted on October 6, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

Does the Vermont Democratic Party still hate the Vermont Progressive Party?

It appears so, judging by the way it’s holding a stale grudge against candidates who call themselves progressive and run for office as both Democrats and Progressives.

Dave Zuckerman, a Hinesburg organic farmer, ran for lieutenant governor this year as both a D and a P. But the state Democratic apparatus has consistently — even now — withheld its proprietary voter information from his campaign.

Gregory Dennis: I'm seeking paradise on Nantucket Island

Posted on September 22, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

I’ve been on Nantucket for the past few days, revisiting a place I’d spent the past 40 years idealizing as an island paradise. Forty years, that is, since I last visited this 14-mile-long sandbar off the Massachusetts coast.

I thought it was paradise. But now I’m not sure.

Paradise Lost is a theme as old as the Book of Genesis. We lose a little bit of paradise when we emerge from our mother’s womb. Perhaps it’s inevitable that this drama, the sense of something gone, will be played out in ways large and small throughout our lives.

Gregory Dennis: Columnist works in an over-computerized world

Posted on September 8, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

I have five computers.

It took three of those computers just to write this column.

Something has gone terribly wrong.

It used to be that a columnist could pound out a thousand words on a manual Smith Corona typewriter and be done with it.

To be sure, there was plenty of cutting and pasting involved in that process. (And for those of you who don’t know Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings, I do mean actual cutting and pasting of little scraps of paper with words on them.)
