Greg Dennis: Ag traditions old and new in House race

Posted on October 23, 2014 |
By Greg Dennis

It’s been true for decades that in Vermont most of us no longer live or work on farms. Addison County sometimes even seems to be slowly suburbanizing.

So it’s easy to forget how wrapped up Vermont’s identity remains with agriculture — from the beauty of our landscape to the local produce at the natural foods store around the corner.

While our politics are often dominated by concerns about energy, social services and healthcare, agriculture still has a big role to play.

Greg Dennis: Dial 'stolen phone' for aggravation

Posted on October 8, 2014 |
By Greg Dennis

I knew as soon as I walked back into the office that there was a problem.

I had two of the big three — my wallet and keys. But I couldn’t locate my iPhone.

After several frantic searches of the car, I called the café where I’d been sitting outside while I worked on email and quaffed a coffee. They checked the tables where I’d been sitting and didn’t see the phone.

Greg Dennis: Paul McCartney's long, winding road

Posted on July 9, 2014 |
By Greg Dennis

I always liked John best.

He had the most irreverent sense of humor. He wasn’t afraid to make the kind of brutally frank social commentary that we heard from so few public figures back then.

John once said the Beatles were “more popular than Jesus,” and he might have been right.

George was inscrutable, and Ringo was for girls — except for the girls who like Paul best. He was the cute one.

Greg Dennis: At a college reunion, ghosts of present and past

Posted on June 12, 2014 |
By Greg Dennis

A woman takes her seat for a long train ride in a foreign country. She’s a plant biologist who travels the world to study and document rare plant species. It’s one more trip among many.

For the past two years, since her husband Michael died, she’s been traveling even more. Sometimes staying ahead of the pain, sometimes just learning to live with it. (This is a true story, though the names and some details have been changed to protect the principals’ identities.)

Greg Dennis: I Spy the stranger of my dreams

Posted on May 1, 2014 |
By Greg Dennis

"In the spring a young man’s fancy lightly turns to love,” wrote the poet Tennyson.

But in the “I Spy” section of personal ads in Seven Days, the fancy of men and women isn’t restricted to springtime. It turns to love all year round.

The Burlington-based alternative weekly has been running I Spy ads for most of its nearly 20 years, helping casual strangers make romantic connections.

Greg Dennis: Healthcare hope — Single payer & the ACA

Posted on January 23, 2014 |
By Greg Dennis

What’s the true nature of our expensive healthcare system? Is it an overregulated mess that’s crying out for free-market forces to improve quality and lower costs, by expanding competition among providers?

Or is it an under-regulated mess that’s crying out for a single-payer system to improve quality and lower costs, by eliminating the expensive, greedy middlemen known as insurance companies?

Greg Dennis: A romantic life in song lyrics

Posted on December 11, 2013 |
By Greg Dennis

Step into this house, girl, and I’ll sing for you a song. I’ll tell you all about where I’ve been. It shouldn’t take too long.

I lived with the decent folks in the hills of old Vermont. Where what you do all day depends on what you want.

I took up with a woman there when I was just a kid, and I smile like the sun to think of the loving that we did. Yankee lady so good to me, Yankee lady, just a memory.

Greg Dennis: Turning up the 'Summer Heat' on coal

Posted on August 8, 2013 |
By Greg Dennis

It’s an impossibly beautiful summer morning in Vermont — and I’m leaving the state on the last Saturday of July to go sit in a dirty church basement in Providence, R.I.

My travel takes me south through the mountain towns of Jamaica and Townshend along Route 30. There’s a farmer’s market along the way, and in another town they’re getting ready for a parade.

On the shortcut through Brattleboro I pass the old ski jump on the edge of town, near signs protesting a skateboard park.

Between the Lines: Bob Dylan hiding in plain sight

Posted on July 25, 2013 |
By Greg Dennis

The Dylan tickets arrived in the mail a couple weeks before last Sunday’s show at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. I’d spent a ridiculous amount of money to get the best seats.

Dylan is 72 and he’s been a smoker forever and survived a weird heart ailment. So if you’re a fan, you always have to wonder if the next Dylan show you see will be the last one.

And having seen him perform in hayfields, outdoor venues, and cavernous basketball arenas, I wanted just once to see him up close.
