Greg Dennis: Town fight vs. solar array is wasteful

Posted on June 16, 2016 |
By Greg Dennis

So it’s come to this.

The selectboard in New Haven is spending taxpayer money tilting at windmills. Well, actually, tilting at solar panels.

The board is using public money to ask the Vermont Supreme Court to overturn approval of an appropriately sited, state-approved solar energy project in the town.

The board and a minority of New Haven residents have criticized solar projects in the town for being too visible from Route 7. These projects, they worry, can disrupt valley and mountain views.

Greg Dennis: Is 'Trumpmania' a media phenomenon or news?

Posted on March 10, 2016 |
By Greg Dennis

Has the media’s obsession with Donald Trump gone too far?

On the cable news networks, it’s often All Trump, All the Time. That has prompted the media’s critics — who are never in short supply — to question this obsession with the coarse braggart who is leading the Republican presidential race.

Greg Dennis: Optimism on Vermont's 'climate economy'

Posted on February 25, 2016 |
By Greg Dennis

When confronted with the latest piece of bad news about climate change — record-high temperatures, devastating floods, the North Pole turned into a giant swimming pool — I’m inclined to respond as the writer Dorothy Parker did to many events:

“What fresh hell is this?”

So it was with surprise and delight that I found 500 Vermonters talking this week — not about the latest gloom-and-doom scenario, but about how a rapidly changing climate can be the basis for a new and better Vermont economy.

Greg Dennis: Remedies for snow-starved skiers

Posted on February 11, 2016 |
By Greg Dennis

Mad River Glen is famous for its “Ski It If You Can” slogan.

But in a winter like this one, what’s a skier to do if — ski it, you can’t?

Despite a bit of white stuff this week, we are in the grip of one of the warmest winters in memory, due in part to climate change and El Niño. So while Colorado skiers are experiencing Powder Nirvana, we have so far been consigned to a Vermont “winter” that resembles nothing so much as Georgia in January.

Greg Dennis: Bold leadership on Vermont divestment

Posted on January 14, 2016 |
By Greg Dennis

What a difference a year makes.

In 2014, Gov. Peter Shumlin made national headlines with a bold State of the State address that highlighted opiate addiction.

Last year, by contrast, the governor had to find a back way out of the Statehouse after his annual address. His normal exit was blocked by dozens of angry protesters, who objected to his abandoning the dream of single-payer healthcare.

Fast forward to this year’s address — and once again Shumlin plays the role of bold leader.

Greg Dennis: Hashtag is not a breakfast dish

Posted on August 5, 2015 |
By Greg Dennis

So is social media making us all one big happy human family? Are we all friends now that we’re on Facebook — or are we fake friends who’ve been fooled into exposing our personal interests so companies can market to us?

Most of us — a billion-plus — have made our peace with Facebook. It’s not just a way to find long-lost friends. It’s an easy way to keep in touch with people we don’t see every day.

Greg Dennis: Joni Mitchell, a life in song

Posted on April 23, 2015 |
By Greg Dennis

Get ready to say goodbye to Joni Mitchell.

The esteemed singer-songwriter was recently hospitalized after being found unconscious at her Southern California home. She is a survivor of childhood polio, 60 years of smoking, 50 years of fame (she called it “a glamorous misunderstanding”) and Morgellon’s syndrome.

Mitchell may not be long for this world. But she will leave behind a legacy of song that will outlast the century.

Greg Dennis: Restoring Congress' tarnished name

Posted on April 8, 2015 |
By Greg Dennis

Can Congress be saved?

No one is talking about abolishing this once august institution. But Congress is suffering from a well-deserved reputation for partisan bickering and gridlock, which have resulted in little recent action to address the nation’s challenges.

And as for global issues such as the environment — well, let’s just say the solutions are not going to emerge anytime soon from Capitol Hill.

Greg Dennis: Vermont has felt its share of cold

Posted on February 26, 2015 |
By Greg Dennis

There’s an old story about the Vermont farmer who had his farm in the Connecticut River Valley.

Over the years, the river had changed course several times and eventually, out-of-state surveyors were hired to determine exactly where the state line was.

When their work was completed, it fell to one of the surveyors to tell the old Vermont farmer that his land was in fact not in Vermont, but was actually in New Hampshire.

“I’m mighty glad to hear that!” the farmer said.
