One day out of the year, a fair came to Craftsbury, Vermont. Adelard and Mary Paquette lived on a modest farm about five miles from Craftsbury Common, where the fair was held. Their seven children looked forward to the fair, and though the Great Depression wringed wallets dry, Mary gave her third son Lucien a quarter to spend on sweets at the festival. Lucien returned later that day with 20 cents and a five-cent pack of chewing gum for his mother.

NEW HAVEN — Heifers at the 4-H Youth Dairy Show Conformation Class at the Addison County Fair and Field Days are scrutinized on almost every physical trait — from their big wet noses to their tasseled tails, the animals are judged based on an “ideal” for the breed.

But the heifer is not the only one feeling the heat. To be a champion, handlers age eight to 18 must train and groom their animals to perfection.

Jackie Rose looks back to a point in her life over 20 years ago when she met her soul mate. Given the opportunity to do it over again, she wouldn’t change a thing — except where she picked him up.

Now, she says, “I know better.”

After almost two decades of waiting, Rose was finally in a position to start her search for “the right one.” She just bought her first home in Florida and had a budding career: it was time.

By CHELSEY PLETTS
MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County Humane Society has rarely turned away an animal during its 34-year history as a safe haven for the lost, abandoned, abused or surrendered.

Now, however, the shelter is seeing a critical number of cats pouring into the facility at a rate that Executive Director Jackie Rose is concerned they cannot keep up with.

“We are facing a cat overpopulation crisis,” Rose said. “The number of cats and unwanted cats that are in our communities is reaching really epidemic proportions.”

When Oliver Lathrop came to Vermont in the late 1700s the land was covered in heavy spruce and fir trees. His son, Jim, cut one of the first Lathrop homesteads, the Lust Farm in Lincoln, from deep mountain forest.

NEW HAVEN — Naomi Wimberley-Hartman and her four-legged dance partner had never performed together before. Nevertheless, the pair spring through serpentines and circles in intricate movements, each footfall perfectly in sync with one another.

It is only the second day of rehearsal, but the dancers — one human and one a horse — move like professionals.

And they should. The two are members of the New Haven-based Equine Dance Company, which for several years has put on shows combining human and equine dancing.

In the late 1950s, Essex Fells, N.J. was a typical white-collar town. A number of professionals, mostly stockbrokers and attorneys, rode the train to Manhattan each morning for work.

Tony Fraioli was not one of these men.

In the basement of his New Jersey home was a laboratory stacked with shelves holding glass jars of chemicals and solutions and a sink for developing photographs. Here, Tony worked on a long-life lithium battery that would run one of the first electric cars and cause a minor explosion that could be heard by his family upstairs at the dinner table.

New Lincoln camp builds unique community (with slideshow)

LINCOLN — When the people of Zeno Mountain Farm get together each summer, it’s more like a family reunion than a summer camp, according to Peter and Ila Halby, the husband and wife team who are its directors.

The Lincoln nonprofit is the newest incarnation of a series of multi-age summer camps originally founded as “Camp Jabberwocky” on Martha’s Vineyard in 1953. Like its predecessors, Zeno Mountain Farm has the uncommon mission of hosting a mix of people with and without developmental and physical disabilities. The goal is to create and sustain a unique community.
