Editorial: Highway funding stalemate highlights nation's undoing

Recent headlines tell the story of Congressional Republicans fighting with Democrats over highway funding. Republicans, who control the House, are holding funds to the states hostage in the hopes of forcing reductions in spending — or, at least, transferring more of the cost onto states. (How that helps taxpayers we’re not sure, but Republicans could at least claim they reduced federal spending.)

Editorial: State demographics signal 'scary' times for rural areas

Here are two seemingly contradictory numbers that represent the nut of Vermont’s economic challenge: In the past four years, Vermont’s workforce has shrunk by 8,700 workers, while the total employed has gone up slightly from 339,700 in 2014 from 338,400 in 2013.”

Now, wait a minute, you might think. How can the workforce be shrinking by that much and we have more total employment over the past two years? And if total employment is up, and unemployment is statistically at rock bottom (3.3 percent), what’s the big worry?

“There they go again.”

The Gipper (President Ronald Reagan) said it of Democrats in the 1980s for what he claimed was twisting the truth in congressional battles. The same phrase could be used in Vermont these days as opponents of Gov. Peter Shumlin and his administration produce a continous chorus of negativity about the state’s economy.

What does it mean to be a festival at 36?

It means a lot of creative energy, hard work, restless nights and thousands of volunteer hours have been invested in the festival’s success over the past 36 years.

It means committees researching musical acts for the twice-nightly performances, plus magicians and a whole other set of performers for the kid shows each noon. It means reaching out to them, getting rejections, negotiating prices, and finally booking the 17 acts each year.

When former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice delivered a speech at Norwich last Thursday, she stayed true to the tune played during President George W. Bush’s eight years in office from 2000 to 2008 — that U.S. intervention in international affairs is the purview of the United States and our duty to make the world a safer place.

Editorial: Canada OKs oil pipeline to British Columbia coast as U.S. Senate committee OKs Keystone

As the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee voted 12-10 this week in support of the Canadian-based Keystone XL Pipeline that would cut through the country on its way to the Gulf of Mexico, groups in the western province of British Columbia are preparing to fight another pipeline, called the Northern Gateway, from the same tar sands region of Alberta to the BC Pacific coast.

A more vibrant GOP voice would make Vt. stronger

Posted on June 5, 2014 |

As the deadline for filing for political office in Vermont nears its June 12 cutoff, the Vermont Republican party is largely missing in action. A gubernatorial candidate is yet to be named. No notable party leaders have stepped to the fore for down-party offices, and while there is talk about working to take legislative seats, there has been little action. By comparison, the Progressive Party’s filing for 21 statewide seats and offices is far more impressive and makes the GOP look weak and disorganized.

Rep. Heidi Scheuermann, R-Stowe, opted not to represent her party as the gubernatorial candidate to challenge Gov. Peter Shumlin for reelection this November, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t interested in running for the state’s top office down the road, or at least grabbing the political spotlight when she can. That seems obvious from her op-ed released at the end of last week challenging the Democrats’ estimation of their own performance this biennium.

Editorial: Lisman's choice opens up new role for Campaign Vermont

Posted on May 22, 2014 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

In state political news, the biggest announcement of the week was Bruce Lisman reporting that he would not be running for governor against Democrat incumbent Peter Shumlin. That seemingly gives Shumlin clear sailing for another two-year term. Considering the controversial issues at stake — paying for health care reform, restructuring school governance and getting school spending under control, and keeping a lid on state taxes, to name a few — it’s surprising that a strong opponent hasn’t yet emerged.
