Editorial: From hate springs love

In the wake of Republican Donald Trump election as president, more than 700 incidents of “hateful harassment” were documented in the first week after the Nov. 8 election. It was, without doubt, a reaction to the hate-filled rhetoric used by Mr. Trump to pit one America against the other. It was, we now know, a deliberate and calculated tactic to win the election by pitting angry, white middle class Americans against minorities of any sort — and, unfortunately, it worked.

Editorial: Sheriff's action was legal, but not good public policy

By Angelo S. Lynn

Ever so often, all of us will make a judgment call that is off base, and we sometimes struggle to find the footing to set it right. That’s particularly so when no rules or laws are broken; or when no outright violation of norms were broken, yet still the call falls short of expectations.

Such is the case with Addison County Sheriff Don Keeler’s decision to use the general fund account from the sheriff’s office to pay for a political ad supporting his favored candidate for high bailiff. That candidate was one of four in the running.

You don’t have to ski, or even like winter sports (though it helps), to appreciate the world-class event Killington Resort pulled off this past weekend when it hosted the first World Cup racing event in Vermont in 38 years.

Editorial: Feeling Thankful? Sure...

In the wake of electing a candidate whose platform was largely based on racism, sexism and xenophobia, we look at this Thanksgiving holiday with less hope for our nation. And when we see President-elect Trump’s cabinet being filled with characters who in most other times in recent decades would be shunned because of their hateful speech toward others, short-sighted immigration policies and unbridled corporate greed, it is no wonder so many Americans fear for their safety and despair of economic and social justice.

Editorial: A heavy lift for U.S. voters

Two items hit the news last week that we might as well be prepared for in a Donald Trump presidency: Trump taking credit for something he didn’t do, and bad news on the environmental front.

Last Thursday, Trump claimed he saved a Ford plant in Kentucky from moving to Mexico. Not so fast, said the Ford company. Facts are the plant was never going to move to Mexico, but rather just a small line of production involving the Lincoln utility vehicle, the MKC.

Editorial: Post-election: What now?

Posted on November 17, 2016 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

The morning after this election, the liberal nation was in a daze and even Trump supporters were shocked. The prevailing political wisdom and the polls were off just enough to produce an unexpected result and send President-elect Donald Trump to the White House, with a narrow 52-48 majority in the Senate and control of the House. Just 10 days earlier such an outcome seemed inconceivable.

The week after the election, the daze is slowly lifting, allowing more analytical thinking. Two questions must be asked and understood: What happened? What now?

Editorial: No tolerance for hate speech

The illusion that idyllic Vermont was wrapped in a political bubble away from the hate and racism demonstrated in much of the country was shattered this week when two swastikas were painted on the front door of Havurah, the meeting house for Addison County’s Jewish congregation in Middlebury, and hate speech was scrawled on the dorm room of a female Muslim student at Middlebury College.

Editorial: The 19-foot option for rail bridges; If it's viable, nothing else beats it

A public meeting this Thursday by the Vermont Agency of Transportation to update residents on the Middlebury downtown bridge/rail project will hopefully do more than review a plan that has come under fire. Rather, it is hoped the AOT will come prepared to answer questions posed in an 18-page document drafted by Bristol attorney James Dumont on behalf of several Middlebury residents that skewers the proposed four-year project.

Editorial: Inconceivable! And yet there is hope

Posted on November 10, 2016 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

President-elect Donald Trump’s stunning victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton left much of the nation hanging its head in dejection and disbelief. It was for many, to use the famous single-word line in the movie Princess Bride, “inconceivable.”

“I simply can't believe it,” said one local millennial. “America actually chose the schoolyard bully... hate reigns in America. I’m so disappointed and disillusioned about what it means to be an American.”
