Raise your hand if you’ve been to a professional convention, trade show, or other event held to honor winners, provide training, and help you network with colleagues in the greater region.

We go every February to the stately Boston Park Plaza for the New England Newspaper and Press Association convention, attend seminars over two days, have at least one good dinner out on the town, celebrate well-deserved awards, and then head back for a Sunday at home. It’s fun, engaging and we all learn more than we ever expect.

Clippings: The editor's role — tempering the tempest?

If you’re thinking of getting into a written squabble, Mark Twain once wrote, “never pick a fight with people who buy ink by the barrel.”

It’s a joke most aptly applied to the days of yore when newspapers, run by mavericks like William Randolph Hearst and others in the peak of Yellow Journalism (1895-8), were, let’s say, sometimes less than ethical.

Editorial: 725,000 reasons to give

Posted on November 4, 2013 |
By Angelo Lynn

“Together we can make a difference.” That’s one phrase many area residents associate with the United Way of Addison County.

“The Way Addison County cares” is another.

Both are apt reminders of the way the United Way works: It relies on a large group of volunteers to reach out and help people in need. It works with more than two-dozen agencies in Addison County to be sure the human and social needs of people in the county don’t go unmet.

Editorial: Rail upgrades should prompt a changing mindset in Vermont

Posted on September 9, 2013 |
By Angelo Lynn

Good news came last Thursday in the form of a $8.9 million grant to rebuild 20 miles of state-owned Vermont Railway track between Leicester and Rutland. It’s part of the $18.5 million project that will refurbish the tracks between Burlington and Rutland and allow the trains to move at higher speeds. The hope is the improved rail will spur economic development.

Editorial: Creating a town jewel in Middlebury

Posted on September 5, 2013 |

One of the legitimate uses of town tax dollars is the creation of public space in the form of parks, town recreation areas and perservation of historic areas or structures that would otherwise fall into decay. To that end, a worthy deal is in the making through which the Middlebury Area Land Trust would deed to the town the historic powerhouse at the north end of the Otter Creek falls in downtown Middlebury.

Bone up on your facts. Study the underlying problems facing the state. Consider both sides of the issue. Craft a concise two-minute argument to make your point and plan on presenting your opinion at the Public Service Board hearing on the proposed $70 million, 43-mile natural gas pipeline extending from Colchester to Middlebury.

Editorial: Nuclear power's failed promise

Posted on August 29, 2013 |
By Angelo Lynn

Not that long ago, nuclear power was the promise to the world’s looming energy crisis. Back in the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s when nuclear power was spreading its wings, the continental U.S. was exhausting its known crude oil reserves at an alarming rate and we were becoming dependent on oil from the Middle East. Long gas lines at service stations in the 1973 oil crisis, amid black outs in New York City, punctuated the need for diverse power sources.

Yesterday was the second year anniversary of Tropical Storm Irene. Gov. A Titanic collision looms

Climate change was back in the news this week as an international panel of scientists released a report that found — with 95 percent certainty — that human activity is the cause of most of the temperature increases of recent decades. More importantly, it warns that sea levels could potentially rise by more than three feet by the end of the century if carbon emissions continue to accellerate. Storms, as demonstrated in recent years, are predicted to be more fierce and more frequent.
