After weird weather, city sewage over ow among state’s largest

VERGENNES — Weather extremes late last week — heavy rains, warm temperatures that melted existing snow, and then a hard freeze — triggered overflows to municipal sewer systems around Vermont, notably in Vergennes, St. Albans and Rutland.

All plant operators are required to report combined sewer system overflows to the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). That’s because the overflows are mostly storm water after weather events such as those last week, but also contain septic waste.

ADDISON COUNTY — With senior guard Keagan Dunbar scoring a program-record 41 points, the Middlebury Union High School girls’ basketball team broke through for its first win on Tuesday, 67-52, against an Otter Valley team that staged a fourth-quarter rally but could not overcome a large Tiger lead.

Dunbar iced the victory and broke her own scoring record by hitting eight free throws in the final 1:02 after OV fought back from 19 points down to within 59-50 on an Alia Edmunds hoop with 1:35 to go.

Addison Northwest warns budget with lower spending, higher taxes

By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — The Addison Northwest School District Board on Wednesday agreed to propose a district-wide spending plan of $21,106,261 that if approved by voters on Town Meeting Day would cut current spending by about $10,000.

Because of a projected statewide school tax rate increase of 9.4 cents that budget would still increase the ANWSD property tax rate by 8.33 cents, according to preliminary district estimates provided to the board. Those estimates still hinge on factors that will be determined outside the district.

VERGENNES — Work could begin soon to convert the former Vergennes police station’s squad room into a city hall conference room that would host meetings of the development review board, planning commission and possibly city council.

Vergennes City Council members last week discussed the final steps of the renovation of the former police station space, a project that Mayor Michael Daniels said would cost no more than $15,000.

BRISTOL — The Otter Valley Union High School boys’ basketball team has relied on the scoring of senior guard Josh Letourneau and junior guard Dylan Mackie this winter. Entering Saturday’s game at Mount Abraham the two had combined for more than 30 points per game, with no other Otter in double figures.

Understandably, then, Eagle Coach Martin Clark used a triangle-and-two defense to start out, with two guards chasing the OV standouts and three others protecting the paint.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College’s endowment has grown to an estimated $1.2 billion, according to David Provost, who joined the college as its executive vice president for finance and administration a year ago. And in a few years annual interest from that endowment should allow the college to better pursue goals that will directly benefit students, such as increasing financial aid and improving already well known language, environmental and international schools.

ADDISON COUNTY — After years of stagnation, the region’s real estate market has in more recent years shown signs of life, according both to statistics and longtime Vergennes real estate appraiser Bill Benton, also Middlebury’s town assessor.

According to data provided by Benton, in the past three years — and especially in 2017 — the number of homes sold in Addison County has increased annually, as has the median sales price (defined as the most common price at which homes sell, not the average).

MIDDLEBURY — On Tuesday night the Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team saw the return of a key player from injury, moved another key player into a new role, deployed a new forechecking system, and, arguably, played with renewed determination.

Those ingredients helped produce what might have been the 3-4 Tigers’ biggest win of the season, 2-1 over visiting Northfield/Montpelier.
