NEW HAVEN — Some of the greatest suspense at Thursday night’s muddy running of the No. 1 Auto Parts Demolition Derby at Addison County Fair and Field Days was whether the thunderstorms slamming the area would cancel the event.

Ultimately, to the relief of about 1,000 rain-soaked fans — including the Middlebury Union High School Class of 1987 enjoying their 25th reunion at the fair — and dozens of drivers who had spent hours knocking their beaters into running condition, organizers gave the green light to the motorized mayhem.

MIDDLEBURY — Despite Saturday’s searing heat, the second annual Vermont Beer, Wine and Cheese Festival drew about 1,500 paid visitors to Middlebury’s Marble Works, allowing the event to roughly equal the numbers and financial benefits from 2011, organizers said.

MIDDLEBURY — A Sunday soccer tournament created by a Middlebury teen raised $1,499.50 for Grassroot Soccer, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting the spread of the HIV/AIDS virus in Africa.

Organizer Kelsey Smith, 14, herself an active and accomplished player in the sport, said the first of what she hopes will become an annual “Midd For Kids” event was a success, especially with the late addition of adult teams to the Fucile Field event pushing the tally higher.

Games always prove gripping

As usual, the Olympics have hooked me. No, I haven’t watched the London Games 24/7. The need to stain our deck, get our new desktop computer up to speed and other household chores have gotten in the way. Oh, and they actually expect me to show up for work, too. The nerve.

Still, my family and I have watched a fair amount, some live on our desktop, some painfully parceled out by NBC in primetime, and some recorded on our DVR. The DVR is great because it allows us to skip through video of gymnasts and swimmers when they were kids, not to mention Super Pac ads.

Ferrisburgh taxpayers see rates decrease

Posted on August 6, 2012 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — Despite at least modest increases in town spending and in the Ferrisburgh Central School and Vergennes Union High School budgets, Ferrisburgh’s 2012-2013 property tax rates dropped from this past year.

Ferrisburgh’s new residential rate stands at $1.6276 per $100 of assed value — 10.58 cents lower than the 2011-2012 rate.

That decrease translates to a tax bill that is about $200 lower for a Ferrisburgh home assessed at $200,000, assuming its owners are not eligible for property tax relief.

By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — A Burlington man with ties to Ferrisburgh on Monday was officially charged with second-degree murder for taking the life of Conrad Bell, 40, of Vergennes during a confrontation at a Ferrisburgh bonfire just before midnight on July 27.

At a Monday afternoon arraignment in Rutland Superior Court, Joseph Bolduc, 25, pleaded innocent to that charge as well as a number of other charges stemming from the aftermath of an incident in which Vermont State Police allege Bolduc struck Bell with a tire iron in the neck at least twice and caused his death.
