If anyone out there doesn’t believe in Santa Claus, please check out the kid’s picture on our Dec. 6 front page smiling at St. Nick in wide-eyed wonder. Case closed.

Now that it has been once again re-established that Santa is real, I have a few sports-world requests for the Sage of the North Pole.

Many people deserve the gift of their dreams: Santa should give them what they want, which herein will be defined as “Visions of Sugar Plums.”

MIDDLEBURY — Coming into Saturday’s home game against 5-1 Skidmore, a Middlebury men’s basketball team with four returning starters from groups that earned four NCAA Division III berths carried a 7-0 record and the No. 3 ranking.

But the Panthers lacked a signature win despite their record, and their defense had not risen to the level of past seasons, when they have led the nation in field-goal percentage against.

VERGENNES — In October 1982, Linda Cook, then 20, went to work as a retail clerk for Fishman’s Department Store owner David Coen at the corner of Main and Green streets, right in the center of Vergennes.

Since then, Cook’s career has never left the heart of downtown, although she did switch sides of the road: She worked from 1997 to 2005 at Classic Stitching, on the other side of Green Street, after Coen closed Fishman’s in 1997.

MIDDLEBURY — In its home opener on Tuesday, the Middlebury College women’s basketball team shrugged off both a series of injuries and visiting Norwich in earning a convincing, 72-44 win.

The 3-4 Panthers harassed the 4-3 Cadets into missing 14 of their first 15 shots and took a 23-2 lead with 10:25 gone. Eight Panthers scored in that stretch.

Then, after the Cadets sank four three-pointers to get within 15 at 34-19, the Panthers scored the final six points of the first half to lead at the break by 21.

VERGENNES — Addison Northwest Supervisory Union Superintendent Tom O’Brien will retire following the 2013-2014 school year after 13 years in Vergennes, and on Nov. 28 he received the ANwSU board’s approval to work less than full-time — on a 60-percent basis — during the upcoming academic year.

Last Wednesday the ANwSU board also gave approval to O’Brien to negotiate with longtime Addison Central School (ACS) Principal Wayne Howe about coming aboard as a part-time ANwSU assistant superintendent next year.

VERGENNES — A smaller-than-expected annual federal grant award has left the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Vergennes scrambling in the middle of its fiscal year and will probably mean closing the club’s center for younger members.

Club executive director Mike Reiderer said when he and the organization’s board sat down and came up with this year’s budget, they had counted upon the same roughly $100,000 bequest from a federal program that had been awarded in the past two years.

MIDDLEBURY – The Middlebury College men’s hockey team followed up a disappointing 3-3 tie in Friday’s home opener vs. Connecticut with a display of their potential against visiting Tufts on Saturday afternoon in a 9-2 romp.

The 3-1-2 Panthers excelled in all phases against the 3-3-1 Jumbos, passing crisply, moving well off the puck, finishing chances, breaking out of their zone and attacking the Tufts end with possession, winning battles for the puck, playing hustling defense, and getting solid goaltending.
