Addison sees tax rate drop

ADDISON — Due to a combination of factors, the town Addison’s residential property tax rates dropped by 14.8 percent for the 2012-2013 fiscal year, while the town’s commercial property tax rate fell by 10 percent.

Addison’s new residential rate is $1.5412 per $100 of assessed value, down from $1.8084.

That decrease of almost 27 cents translates to a tax bill that is about $534 lower for an Addison home assessed at $200,000, assuming its owners are not eligible for property tax relief.

CASTLETON — The Addison County American Legion baseball team fell short of its ultimate goal when Essex eliminated AC from the state championship tournament on Sunday, 11-1, but the local nine enjoyed a strong summer.

AC won twice at the state tournament after earning the No. 2 seed in the Northern Division with a 12-4 record, in the process erasing some of the sting of the team’s 2011 tournament performance — AC lost twice and was the first squad ousted.

VERGENNES — Early this spring, the original plan for one of the most prominent pieces of the Vergennes skyline called for a paint job.

That’s when Tim and Liz Ryan, owners of the Ryan Block, a Main Street landmark that has borne their family name since a previous generation bought the 172-year-old building in 1965, asked Cornwall’s Jonathan Hescock for cosmetic work on the cupola atop their three-story structure.

Thoughts on the summer sports scene

Posted on July 12, 2012 |

In the heat of July, sustained focus and long, reasoned arguments can be difficult to maintain, especially for the easily distracted.

Wait, was that the hummingbird at the fuchsia again?

Oh, right, anyway, it’s time for a sports snippets column.

• As of late last week, the last two baseball games I saw played were an American Legion Addison County team game and a Vermont Lake Monsters vs. Lowell Spinners contest in Burlington.

VERGENNES — A settlement of a site-contamination case should soon pave the way for the restoration of prominent, but long vacant, buildings next to the Otter Creek falls in Vergennes, according to the structures’ owner.

Ferrisburgh resident David Shlansky, the principal in Shenandoah LLC, the company that owns the former Haviland Shade Roller Mill and its nearby Annex, said he now hopes in the months to come to revive plans to put shops, office space and condominiums in the two historic Canal Street properties.
